This is a site for a coffee shop with entertainment.
I got set up with a Graphic Designer who wants to do the design and have me do the css, html, flash photo gallery, contact form and a possible cms/database.They like to see a few different prices broken down.
What would you charge? Thanks in advance!
Home (3 or 4 photos on the front page flash)
About
Directions
Menu (price with pdf and price with database)
Contact
Events (price with pdf and price with database)extras: (price separately)
newsletter (with subscribe button on the home page)
Photo gallery: slideshow (flash: scrolling photos above the photo)

Local coffee shop? Presumably gotta work with a local graphic designer who probably creates calendars for pet shops for a career? Flash work? Low profile?
$2,000 because it's easy. Add $3,000 because it's probably a crappy gig.

That is a good point Machuse. I'll have to bring it up to them.
However, if they are updating the music schedule on a weekly/monthly basis it's not that difficult to add menu pricing on to the cms. What should I tack on for the "extras" like...setting them up and account in constant contact and tying it to the home page?
and a flash photo gallery?I'm confused on how to break pricing apart into small bits.
- for something like that maybe contribute would be better?cramdesign

i recently asked for €3000 for something similiar to this, for a hotel... and they said it was too expensivel...
oh well....

databse and cms alone is some good leg work , so nothing under 3.5k , half to start, half when you deliver

the people on qbn are high profile designers, I dont know that a mom and pop coffe shop would have the kind of money people are quoting on here. I do sites for small biz, I'd charge 1000. Dont let them rush you. And simplify your work as much as possible. I would try to finish it in about 2 days. Make them do all th copy, dont be responsible for errors, and charge an hourly raite of 50$ for everything that doesnt fall within the actual developlment and design

Prices seem cheap, imho. 1000 for site? Crazy.
You get what you pay for. If you do good work, you'd better charge for it, if you do fast/crappy work, then it comes down to how fast you can just crank something out.

stop worrying about what you SHOULD charge. estimate your time and multiply that by your rate and add 20% as a buffer/profit. do good work for a fair price... if they don't go for it move on, if they do, great.

formed ... what do u charge?
knowing that they are just a small company, and that they probably don't need that much personal high end work done?Sometimes you have to come into what people can afford? maybe not, only companies with 5k can have websites ... makes no sence.
All they probably need is a page with directions and a pdf, and about us... does anyone else not get that?
- ukit0
Well, to be fair, he said they are asking for database work...so that might point to it being more than a simple site.

you know, on the flip side of what i posted and building on kjw...
make up a simple price sheet and show them that. if they are like many small clients, they are not really sure what they really need but if they can see a menu of options they can pick and know what it costs. this should still be based upon some sort of rate x time + profit model. if you can get them away from the custom database/cms idea and just what they need, you might find a deal in there.
good luck...

The CMS is the killer, imo. I'd try convincing them that they don't need it. They might, by changing prices, etc., but I'd evaluate the cost/benefit.
I don't charge based on the size of the client's company, I charge based on the work that will be done.
I agree with cram - show them options. When they see that a cms will increase the cost significantly (I'd guess at least 50%), they'll probably be fine with you doing updates at an hourly rate.
If you love coffee like I do, credit or deals on beans (if they are far) would be worth some bargaining bucks too!
