I dropped this post on my blog today:
http://thepublics.wordpress.com/…
as all I've been listening to this past week is old trip-hop records. Anybody used to be in 2 this shit? all the electronic music nowadays is ultra-coke disco, so I hope the new portishead sets off a revival.

Why not just post it here in your thread, why do we need to visit your blog?

Yeah, point taken about the flash music player, nevermind me, I'm just a bit cynical about people linking up their blogs.

Years ago, possibly even decades, there existed a loosely defined genre of music that was marketed under the blanket term “Trip-Hop”, which encapsulated a sound notorious for its lo-fi extrapolation of dark, ambiguous jazz samples and tight sets of compressed drum beats. Trip-Hop was short lived and strictly Trans-Atlantic, with the majority of artists coming from NYC, Bristol and London. The architects of the sound were mostly downtempo outfits like Massive Attack and Portishead, but American stand-outs like the afro-futurist acid-rap duo Dr. Octagon (Kool Keith & Dan The Automator) also a definitive contribution.
After a decade-long hiatus, Portishead released their aptly titled “Third” album back in April to an elated, critically-lauded reception. A trip-hop revival is still a distant reality, but if your memories of a bygone era of pre-apocalyptic mushroom-chomping heroics are still in tact, flush the coke-disco down the toilet and vibe out to these paranoid rec-room bangers.

"...all the electronic music nowadays is ultra-coke disco.."
dude.. you are listening to the wrong radio station..
My advice, start hanging out with new friends, stop going to top 40 clubs, good electronic music usually plays during the week at small local bars (with a few exceptions). there is SO MUCH AMAZING SHIT right now.. its unbelievable.. and none of it is coke disco.
Just a thought...
- true, gross generalization, but I dont go to top 40 clubs, coke disco permeates most the indie dance clubs where I live********

Cocaine is wack. Its such a cheap thrill and it the getback is the worst.
I dont respect it.

publics, I know exactly what you mean, and it's a topic that has raised my shackles and my fists many times over the years..
Blocky, ultra-shiny ploddery hyper-ventilating twirly nonsense that sounds confused and breathless and not entirely happy. Cokey disco is bright lights and introversion, and a particularly smacky and pointless percussion eq. It has no soul, theres no artful yearning to embrace or elate the listener, it tells no story, has no wisdom, because on cocaine there is none. It is the shining silver thread to the sky of techno tied in a knot and forever eating it's own ass because that's all it knows. The same 2 or 3 2 bar phrases that roll and barge between a few black notes never leaving the claustrophobic little mirror box that it lives in.
I too was a great fan of trip-hop back in the day, it's pace and scope are a natural relative of full-on dance floor mechnics, I find much of this 'new' dub step' has much in common, except people listen to it in a venue, whereas I found the natural home of triphop was at 5am surrounded by your mates, smoking and talking crap after a blinding night out by a bassbin.
Don't worry mate, there are 1000's of us with enough wiring behind our ears to hear this nasty, dirty pointless little fad for what it is, and when the rest of the coked out shitterati finally get old and get off the pot, we'll be done of it. They won't be clubbing in 5 years time, but you bet we will.- +1********
- you talking about trip hop like it was from the 70s, makes me feel old. :(Meeklo

I see what you mean. I actually like that kind of sound when it is well-done, but I dig the old trip hop too. Maxinquaye and Massive Attack's Blue Lines are two of my all time favorites. Kool Keith too although I'm not sure I would lump him in with the same crowd.
- kelpie0
man I fucking hate trip hop.
I really really hate people who call it trip hop too
