publics, I know exactly what you mean, and it's a topic that has raised my shackles and my fists many times over the years..
Blocky, ultra-shiny ploddery hyper-ventilating twirly nonsense that sounds confused and breathless and not entirely happy. Cokey disco is bright lights and introversion, and a particularly smacky and pointless percussion eq. It has no soul, theres no artful yearning to embrace or elate the listener, it tells no story, has no wisdom, because on cocaine there is none. It is the shining silver thread to the sky of techno tied in a knot and forever eating it's own ass because that's all it knows. The same 2 or 3 2 bar phrases that roll and barge between a few black notes never leaving the claustrophobic little mirror box that it lives in.
I too was a great fan of trip-hop back in the day, it's pace and scope are a natural relative of full-on dance floor mechnics, I find much of this 'new' dub step' has much in common, except people listen to it in a venue, whereas I found the natural home of triphop was at 5am surrounded by your mates, smoking and talking crap after a blinding night out by a bassbin.
Don't worry mate, there are 1000's of us with enough wiring behind our ears to hear this nasty, dirty pointless little fad for what it is, and when the rest of the coked out shitterati finally get old and get off the pot, we'll be done of it. They won't be clubbing in 5 years time, but you bet we will.
