Words to live by. Many times we'll only show the client one option if we feel it is the absolute best.
I can't stand the shotgun technique.

one of my professors used to say he always knew what was best for the client. on the other hand, the client is paying you - don't you think they deserve to see more than one option? what's more important, the client getting what they think they want, or what you think is best for them?
- i would hope they are paying the designer so much because the designer knows what he or she is doing. and the client doesn't.clickblipclick

I imagine a lot of you have heard the famous Rand quote when Steve Jobs asked him to "design a couple logos" for Apple. Rand replied "If you want someone to design a couple logos, find someone else. If you want me to solve your problem for you, I'll solve your problem."
- I loves that quote. I loves it.brains

Designer: You should really reconsider doing this re-brand yourself, you have no experience in visual communication and it's quite an intricate process with a lot of educated thought that goes into it.
Client: Well, maybe we could do a typography session?

showing 2 concepts to choose from implies there is one bad one which means the designer is max 50% a good designer. percentage can be lowered by increasing the number of suggestions.
situations differ of course. i experienced clients being insecure when they had to make the decision. as long as it is not explicitly demanded i don't show more than 1 concepts.
but in some cases the client is designwise ambitious himself - then it can be appropriate to involve him more into the process instead of a presentation/confrontation with results to choose from.

i never do options that are better than the other, they're simply options that show a different way of looking at the problem.
if you're showing your client options you wouldn't be happy with, there's something else wrong with your ability to weed out and refine ideas to make them good and/or better/presentable.
