  showing 2 concepts to choose from implies there is one bad one which means the designer is max 50% a good designer. percentage can be lowered by increasing the number of suggestions.

  situations differ of course. i experienced clients being insecure when they had to make the decision. as long as it is not explicitly demanded i don't show more than 1 concepts.
  but in some cases the client is designwise ambitious himself - then it can be appropriate to involve him more into the process instead of a presentation/confrontation with results to choose from.
