Just finished watching 'Dr. Strange and the Sorcerer Supreme', I saw 'Justice League' the other day and also the manga type film 'Pom poko'.
I really enjoyed all three and would quite like to start watching more decent animations, but really don't know the first thing about them..
Anyone have any good recommendations along the lines of the three I mentioned?
Cheers

I am a fan of Avatar the Last Airbender. You can check them out here: http://avatarchapters.org/ I am not sure if you're watching with kiddos or just yourself but both my son (6yrs) and I love it.
- Nope no kids, just me! I love the freedom writers have with animation and enjoy the visuals too, i'll check that out thanks cramdesignavolve

I'm not a huge anime fan, but my brother used to write for an anime magazine and introduced me to some of the classic films. I can highly recommend a few of them:
- Ghost in the Shell
- Battle Angel
- Princess Mononoke
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Howl's Moving Castle
- AkiraI've never been brave enough to get into a series but I've seen a few episodes of Cowboy Beebop and Samurai Champloo and they seem like they have pretty great stories and characters.
- Really anything by Hayao Miyazaki.cramdesign
- Miyazaki=geniusukit
- no doubt.cramdesign
- I'm already downloading all of these except Battle Angel, will have a look now, cheers!avolve

i really enjoyed Last Exile and the art direction in the series. If you liked Justice League's animation style, you might also enjoy Samurai Jack, Clone Wars, Big O, Teen Titans

Add Spirited Away to the Miyazaki list. If you only see one (don't watch all of them) pick this one. The character and character vignettes are the best developed.

all movies mentioned already are good.
for series check out:
cowboy bebop
samurai champloo
trigun
samurai 7and of course robotech (mostly the macross series)

In terms of pure animation i think that Steamboy (from Katsuhiro Otomo) is something over the top. I mean, the story may be quite weak, but that is not the point of the movie. The animation is the best thing i ever saw on the genre. it's overdone but is wonderfully overdone. It's an extreme vulgar display of power from the first to the last frame.
That said i'd list
Akira (from otomo)
Quite everything from Miyazaki
Satoshi Kon (Paprika and Perfect blue)
Stuff from Mamoru Oshii (ghost in the shell included)Bllod - the last vampire is amazing as well.
And there are some really good movies made up by 30 mins shorts like Robot carnival or Manie-Manie (labyrinth tales) or Memories or some more i can't remember.

Yes! Just finished Ghost in the Shell season 2 - so good you gotta see it if you're into cyberpunk in anyway.
Also Samurai 7 is choc filled with so much imagination.
Also been watching this one where a guy has a girlfriend on his hand, but can't remember the name. Really funy tho.
And to think this is the kind of stuff folk can get on TV in Japan. Crazy.

Right thats me done thanking everyone with notes.
Cheers for all the input will definitely check out all the recommendations.
I don't own a TV as I think 99% of what they play is utter shit so I like to download and watch on my computer when I have time to chill out.
Have watched a good few films and gotten through enough southparks, family guys, heroes, BSG's and stargates for a lifetime and after watching Dr. Strange I was really impressed.
As I said I just love the creative freedom the writers have and the dreamy/mystical qualities of some of the animations.

I love anime more than anything,
but bringing back GiS or Cowboy bebop is so last century..
the style of anime is evolving so fast then even I have problem keeping up.
here's my personal list of anime, you have to see them to understand how amazing japanese animator/writer have become- death note (amazing)
- ghost hunt (creepy)
- ghost hound (psycological bullshit)
- macross frontier
- claymore (tight combats)
- code geass - lelouch of the rebellion
- dragonauts (boobobauts)
- ghost in the shell (standalone complex)
but this year,
I think "Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi " will rule, if you like sex, splatter, gore and action, this is for you

haha I'm reading conflicting things about whether Di Caprio is starring in it or just producing. Seems like they would want to cast an Asian guy in the lead at minimum.
