    22:13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,
    22:14 And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid:
    22:15 Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate:
    22:16 And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;
    22:17 And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.
    22:18 And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him;
    22:19 And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
    22:20 But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel:
    22:21 Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.

    i'm not saying this makes the passage easier to take, but it's not exactly as it seems...

    The father would have paid a dowry for the girl who claimed to be a virgin. The reason she gets stoned isn't so much because she wasn't a virgin, it's because she lied and falsely represented herself, and effectively stole a great deal of money. If she didn't claim to be a virgin, I don't think the law would be calling for her life.

    Just saying, the sign is a little misleading.

    Also, this portion of the law passed with Christ's arrival. So, these laws are not followed by Christians. The point of the law was to show how far we fall short to live up to the perfection required by God. We realize how much we need someone else to help us, to come before God the Father for our case, this pointing to Christ. Christians read the entire OT as pointing to Christ.

    Just thought I'd give this passage some context, I know my statements are obviously controversial, and just an FYI, I'm not planning on going back and forth on this today.

    • and you believe this is the word of your god? Wow.DrBombay

    I feel bad for children and siblings who will end up having two mommies or two daddies and never knowing who their "real" parents are...last time I checked buttsecks or vagine rubbing doesn't bring offspring. If they're having families, it's not from the "married" couple. Maybe I'm just ignorant though, which I could be. Someone care to explain the other side to me?

    • Do you look down your nose at single parent families, too? And what about those poor adopted children?blaw
    • yes, you are just ignorantlocustsloth
    • I very well could be but care to explain?fyoucher1

    blaw is right. Who cares what comprises a family as long as the love it shares unconditional and makes you feel like a home. I am sure that if a family is great even though there is a same sex partnership, no one is going to ponder what it would have been like to have both a mother and a father.

    It makes me sick to think about all the parents out there who don't deserve to have children. they abuse them physically or more often emotionally (which is so much worse) and end up creating little monsters that turn into fucked up parents and the cycle continues. I have much more faith in a couple who have had to fight for their right to have a family and who care about their kids than %90 of the stupid fucks in the world who think its their god given right to have children.

    I'm not talking about adopting children, single parent, or taking care of children who have been mistreated or abandoned. Totally understand that point. That's a good thing, of course. But not all gay couple will want that obviously and we obviously can't limit gay people to adoption etc. What I'm talking about is the couple who goes out and gets sperm or egg donors and has children that way. What do they tell their children? Daddy and Daddy weren't able to have children because it's not possible for two men to have children naturally so we went out and got a mommy who you'll never know about. I know heterosexual couples do the same thing too but there excuse is usually because of a defect in one of the parents (very similar tho). Now I'm not against this, I'm just taking this from the kids perspective and wondering what will be said to them. I know if I never knew who my mother or father was, I'd be pretty sad and I'd want to know.

    • Yes, you would tell them the truth.DrBombay
    • What will be said to all the children that had their fathers abandon them? When you are old enough to understand where you came from you will appreciate that you came from a loving family.jacklalane

    It's a difficult question but aren't gay couples allowed to adopt anyway?

    When it comes to marriage, I can't find a compelling argument against it. You can quote the crazy Middles Ages bible stuff about stoning virgins like what was posted above, but in the end it's irrelevant, we don't live in a theocracy.

    • Yes. There are thousands of children being raised by gay couples.luckyorphan
    • ...So, the state says it's okay to adopt children, but don't get married.luckyorphan
  • locustsloth0

    Often times same sex parents select people they know as donors. One lesbian couple i know of had the brother of one partner donate sperm to impregnate the other partner, that way the genetics were as close as they could be.
    Also, what makes homosexuality a less valid reason to adopt, use donors and/or surrogates than infertility does?
