i'm not saying this makes the passage easier to take, but it's not exactly as it seems...
The father would have paid a dowry for the girl who claimed to be a virgin. The reason she gets stoned isn't so much because she wasn't a virgin, it's because she lied and falsely represented herself, and effectively stole a great deal of money. If she didn't claim to be a virgin, I don't think the law would be calling for her life.
Just saying, the sign is a little misleading.
Also, this portion of the law passed with Christ's arrival. So, these laws are not followed by Christians. The point of the law was to show how far we fall short to live up to the perfection required by God. We realize how much we need someone else to help us, to come before God the Father for our case, this pointing to Christ. Christians read the entire OT as pointing to Christ.
Just thought I'd give this passage some context, I know my statements are obviously controversial, and just an FYI, I'm not planning on going back and forth on this today.
