What thickness of wood/mdf were you planning on using? 3/4"?

I think that if your joints are tight it will hold together fine. Instead of trying to get the mdf laminated wouldn't it be easier to use a veneered chipboard or even thick plywood?
The other option is making plans and then sending them off to a few lazer cutting places and then getting quotes. It will fit nicely that way.
- errr... no that would be super pricey. I am trying to save on costs here. Plywood maybe an Idea thoughDancer
- MDF actually varnishes up quite nicely. Thats what I used for my desk top. Might be an option.

you can use (Baltic) Birch or (Canadian) Maple in 1/4" (5plys, 6mm).. that way you don't need veneers. You can stain it and paint it.

i'm not sure mdf won't bend overtime.
- it will, guaranteed !********
- Perhaps ply is the way forward then. It will cut better as wellDancer
- it will, guaranteed !

So do you think Solid wood or will ply surfice?
The problem here in the UK is you can only readily get 250mm wide planks of redwood pine which is pretty shit. I need at least 300mm

I knew I had seen it... Where did you find this?
Love the idea of putting a few squares as a solid colour

I'm a knucklehead. I got to thinking about this while driving today and if you use 1/2" minimum thickness on your sheet goods and have tight lap joints that bookcase will be rock solid as you have it designed, Dancer. No need for additional hardware, solid back, case, or anything like that. Forgive my clouded early morning thinking.
It will still be a task getting those joints cut perfectly, but if you take your time during layout and machining you'll be fine.

well 12mm I am going for so if that is 1/2" then cool. Ply aswell because as I think I am going to leave the edge bare and the stripey effect will work well.
Did you see the one above Blaw? I do like the Solid colour on certain sections... may use wallpaper or designs or summit.Gonna draw it up on a Mac so my drawings should be perfectly to scale.
Thanks for the thoughts though....

You might want to look into this while you're at it:
