I'm wondering if it's too big for a laptop? I'd prefer an mbp over mac pro simply because i'll be mobile... often... Anyone have a 17" with any comments?

i have it - its perfect

yes too big for mobile.
if you won't be moving go for it, or get a desktop

On the run all day, every day with my MBP 17". The difference in carrying the 17" vs. a 15" when you have tons of other stuff in the laptop bag too is just silly.
I can never go back to a smaller screen.

15" + a nice big monitor?

also, battery time on the 17 is considerably less than on the 15 or the 12 models.
Another important thing to consider "if you are really going to be mobile".

I think my 17" mbp is a little too big sometimes and I think others share this opinion. I also find it annoying how hot it gets sometimes.
- the hot is a problem on all models unfortunatelyMeeklo
- i think you are right. the newest ones get a little less hot, so i hear... new designs this summer according to macrumorscramdesign

yeah, i like the 15" more personally. my 2 biggest issues w/ 17":
- impossible to work with while on an airplane (first class aside)
- even less battery life than the 15"

I would probably prefer the 15" if the resolution were higher.

I have the 15. I find it perfect for travel. At home ... I go out on my Samie 24. Bliss.

To expand on my post, I carry it around about 12hrs a day (school days are looong) and use it almost everywhere. It doesn't fit well in my backpack, and the screen hinge could be stronger (also the top shell warps a little so sometimes I have to check if it's closed all the way). Battery runs around 2.5-3hrs. I used to have a 15" and liked it a lot more for everything but the screen size. That's really the only reason for the 17", you won't notice much more power.

1 yay for the High res screen. How good is it?

I think the 17" is just fine. It fits in my backpack and seems lighter than my smaller dell laptop.
