i lived in astoria for 6 years, most culturally diverse area of all of nyc including manhattan. lots of dope restaurants and between north side near ditmars and south near broadway there is 5 different train lines plus you have a great deal of busses. the downside to living there are the intensively massive long blocks you must live on. rent is mostly stabilized in every apt to house in astoria as well and most late night cab rides will max out at $12-$15 per ride so thats dope!!!
i suggest you use a broker and let them do all the work. most brokers in astoria dont even charge a fee. or if they do its only 1 month's rent. [i know you probably are under some sort of financial thing but this is for the best so do it right and get the apt you want.]
other than astoria i suggest Williamsburg Brooklyn. now there is a lot of hate from people i have seen on this site and regards towards williamsburg, but really its one of the closest cities to manhattan and really thats what life comes down to, quality of life. for me i like when i leave work i can do what i want in terms of life, getting home for me is less than 15 minutes door to door. that gives me an endless opportunity to do what ever i want with little to no stress.
in the end it will come down to what you can afford and where you want to live. there is always rent stablized apts but you have to find em, but they are there in every single neighborhood in nyc.
good luck and either way throw a party and invite us other new yorkers to your new place!!
: )
- williamsburg is getting too saturated. Even bushwick is starting to get thicksoynutz7
- within 2 blocks of my apt there is at least 40 new building developments.edd-e

whats average price /month for a small appartment?
- pr20
you can get 2 bedroom apt for around $1000 here in Ridgewood, Queens but then you won't get laid as there is no night life here.

what is a small apt?
this also depends on where.it can go from $1000-$3000+
a little more specific will get you a better answer.

NYT article from last week:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/2…I'd search different parts of Brooklyn. You can find some good deals if you have a bit of time to search in places around the downtown area as well. Better than Bushwick imo.

Just my own personal opinion. I fucking hate Queens. The only thing I hate more is Jersey. But I fucking hate Queens.
- And speaking as a car owner in Manhattan, jersey drivers are fucking morons.TheBlueOne

I have lived in Spanish Harlem for a combined 12 years. I am there for the third time right now. Third apartment - it's a studio 1075 per month really spacious, kinda nice for the price.
I would consider that NYC is not what it used to be. Depending on your age you may find a better social scene in one of the aforementioned boros.
I like spanish harlem or 'el barrio' neighborhood...mexican food is top notch and it's roots are 100 percent Italian, but hey lets face it living anywhere in america is a complete bore.

i live in bed stuy and its near almost every train, 30 min to midtown, 10 min to willyburger and park slope, cheap rent, huge space, backyard.
