i lived in astoria for 6 years, most culturally diverse area of all of nyc including manhattan. lots of dope restaurants and between north side near ditmars and south near broadway there is 5 different train lines plus you have a great deal of busses. the downside to living there are the intensively massive long blocks you must live on. rent is mostly stabilized in every apt to house in astoria as well and most late night cab rides will max out at $12-$15 per ride so thats dope!!!

i suggest you use a broker and let them do all the work. most brokers in astoria dont even charge a fee. or if they do its only 1 month's rent. [i know you probably are under some sort of financial thing but this is for the best so do it right and get the apt you want.]

other than astoria i suggest Williamsburg Brooklyn. now there is a lot of hate from people i have seen on this site and regards towards williamsburg, but really its one of the closest cities to manhattan and really thats what life comes down to, quality of life. for me i like when i leave work i can do what i want in terms of life, getting home for me is less than 15 minutes door to door. that gives me an endless opportunity to do what ever i want with little to no stress.

in the end it will come down to what you can afford and where you want to live. there is always rent stablized apts but you have to find em, but they are there in every single neighborhood in nyc.

good luck and either way throw a party and invite us other new yorkers to your new place!!

    : )
