How many people here join membership with those organizations like AIGA (US) or GDC (CAN)?

I don't belong to any of these organizations. don't have enough $$.

damn they charge hefty.
Great for those pretentious designers

i just dont see the benefits of it. you can still go to some events they have. sure, it might cost like 10 bucks more. then again, there really not that many events to goto in the first place. (aiga la chapter).

yeah, it's all just pretentious social gatherings over brunch and feeling like you belong to something. i've been to a few AIGA events and was more focused on my meat and cheese plate than the speaker(s).
- well, you have to recover the $$ you spend. more cheeeeze. heh.akrokdesign

Very active member of AIGA and love it!

The only good thing about these groups is the occasional "celebrity" designer lecture and the social events.
Also, there are attractive women at most of the events.

I haven't seen the benifits that much... if my company picked p the charge then I'm fine, but right now I'm not joining anything on my own.

Hmmm. A lot of successful designers are AIGA members.
A lot of designers who hang around here are not AIGA members.
Does that mean anything?
You have to be successful to join AIGA!

I joined the AIGA because they have great cocktail get togethers monthly. =)

Member of AIGA where I live and regret it completely. I've seen other city chapters where members are active and 'real' designers, but not here, It sucks !!! There has been 1 'get-together' since last year I think....
- univers0
OSFA come up to Minneapolis, you can crash some of our events!

I am sure other chapters are great, I've heard great stuff about AIGA, but unfortunately where I live, it's shite. I'm not that worried tho since my days here might -hopefully be numbered...

This is a document I saved around 2000
Formed in 1983 by design leaders Deborah Sussman, Saul Bass, Jim Cross and others, the Los Angeles chapter is committed to connecting LA's creative community through a year-round program of events, conferences and competitions that recognize design excellence and honor industry ethics, with a special focus on design's impact on the local SoCal economy.
In the past two years, membership has increased over 100% (300% for students), and the chapter has produced over 40 events, increased attendance by 350%, premiered its first annual competition (SOUNDBLAST), debuted its annual Web conference (E-DESIGN), and was a key player in an industry coalition that rewrote California Sales Tax Code #1540. In an effort to heighten appreciation for design as a broadly defined discipline, the chapter actively initiated industry collaborations with SEGD (Society of Environmental Graphic Designers), GAG (Graphic Artists Guild). British American Chamber of Commerce, Royal Society of the Arts, Design Coalition, Armand Hammer Museum, The Getty, Art Center College of Design, American Association of Advertising Agencies, AIGA San Francisco and AIGA San Diego.
In April 2000, the chapter is set to launch its enhanced, e-commerce enabled, database-driven Web site (produced in collaboration with InSync Media Inc.), which will become the primary communication vehicle and pivotal information resource for members and contributing companies - a virtual gathering place and networking opportunity designed to complement the chapter's offline events and activities.
