My God, I just got home and thought I;d check in tot see all the bombing. Afetr I posted I thought "how the hell do you expect anyone to offer ffedback on what is essentially a great big fly".. but there it is, lots of feedback, and fortunately all positive.
Thanks. This was my first 'crit' thread. I put it up on a whim. I try to photograph these big pieces as I do them so that some time when I have the spare time I can make a crazy stop-motion animation of me drawing them.
Next time I'll try and put something more 'commentable' up rather than just a big fly. Maybe some of my commercial work, which I hate.
I think I will leave it black and white but subtle, very subtly lay a very very pale translucent blue in the background so the fly stands out. I have been toying with colour. Engine Cat actually looks okay as a balck and white drawing and when the colours on there it looks a bit cartoony and crap.
Black and white it is then.
Thanks!
Appreciate it, you shmaltzy feelgood bastards.PS: Lloyd.. no drugs. Drugs don't suit me at all. Unfortunately real life is very difficult for me to grasp without them. Spent a long time smoking weed a few years back, but not even that since becoming a dad.
Cheers ya gadges.

I finished my fly picture. Just thought I'd bump the thread for anyone who commented who might want to see it completed. The finished piece is in the OP on page one. Its rolled up already and stuffed behind my easel to be forgotten. A blank square of paper now awaits a new idea. Thanks for the comments and feedback, as always the most negative was the most constructive. Anyway, I'm outta here. S'long.
Spookytim.

don't think it would be as powerful in color, but maybe some solid grey tones to make white areas pop even more. i would take it to stinkos and scan it in to small scale and do some experimental coloring before deciding.

i think that fluor colors in some parts of the criature it would be nice

I decided not to colour it. I decided it was best to finsih it off, cut it down and get going on soemthing new. It may be a bit confusing becuase you are viewing the finished piece in post number one which also asks for opinions on colours etc. I've just updated the image on my website so it automatically updates in the OP here. But the piece is now completed as you see it on page one and has already been put away. I just tought I'd bump the thread for anyone who commented to see how it ended up.
Cheers.
- I like the scale you are working in- not easy...sumi ink and brush next/ faster might be interesing for youcapsize

Next piece... I had sketched this out a while ago but work got in the way so I put it under the easel until today. Although I have a heap of projects to contend with, I decided to treat myself to a day of drawing today, so I have done the hard pencil work on this. As before, I would love to know any comments. Negative ones - if truthful - are often the most useful to me.
Should I colour it?
Should I burn my easel and get on with paid commissions?
Should I change technique?
Improve technique?
Find some more commercial / engaging subject matter?
Does it feel original to you? Unoriginal?
Anything... I know its not that easy or interesting to comment on what is essentially a bit of doodling but it is useful to me. I need to push myself on to new territory and that means doing the complete opposite of what I do commercially and being a bit 'shit' until something original and interesting clicks.Thanks.

love it as always Tim!
I'd say go with black and white. But something like bright green eyes could really make this stand out.
- there's too much dead white and althoughthe thing itself reminds me of Frank Stella sculpture it needs at least a color to frame itcapsize
- color to frame it. B/w is too unforgiving for something so fanciful.

Do another one and have one coloured, one black and white. Also can you have it done by 10pm tonight?

I'm not going to massage your crotch like all the other people have in this thread, I'm going to tell it to you like it is.
Yeah!
Um.
I quite like it - I have no idea what 'it' is, or where 'it' stops and background begins, so although I appreciate it in its current form, I'd prefer to see more contrast and colour in there so I can discern it better. Is that a Venus Fly Trap type thing in the background.. or some appendage of the foreground figure?
I could only get away with that initial paragraph by leaving it 'til the end of the first page here to respond.
- Its all part of the fly Det. It will all blend into one. It has venus fly trappy forms in there, but its part of its back.Spookyhome
- Also, I didn't realise how appalling the phot was. I just shot it and left. Will get the RD-1 out and re-shoot it.Spookyhome

why put poster typography on it? devalues artwork immediately.
finish the drawing with/without color... or just leave as is.
start another one, build a collection, frame or hang them professionally, have a show and sell them as original drawings and much more $$$ than a poster with type.
- I have about 20 already. All rolled up behind the easel. I hope to be rich and succesful when I'm dead.Spookyhome
- It would look cool though?doctor
- Daro0
leave it b/w

wow, nice. Whatever it is. very.

I like it. Looks like a bee reptile thingy.
Hmm...not sure if you should colour it or not. It may stand out more...
