I've read mixed reviews on this lens. Anyone use it? I'd rather get this than the combo of the kit lens and extra zoom lens as I don't like being bulky when I travel. Thoughts?

its nice to have the range but lens like that are always soft in the corners with lots of vignetting

18-200 Nikon is good but go with the VR one...

I am looking to buy a nikon 18-200 as well, looking at other brands atm..

ken rockwell creams over the vr version
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon…- he also loves WAY over saturated and contrasty images.jaylarson

from what I hear, convenient but not great IQ

I wonder if you google "ken" if ken rockwell comes up first

get the sigma 18-200mm instead, its cheaper, built better and there is also an OS (optical stabiliser, like VR) version.
I say this because i have seen both and spoken to a few jessops employees who have said customers have not been happy with nikon 18-200.

As usual you guys are a wealth of knowledge. I'll probably go with the combo of the 18-55 and the 55-200, its a cheaper option anyway.

ive got the 18-55 kit lens and i picked up the 55-200 vr recently to extend my range; it has better reviews on photozone.de (compared to the 18-200 vr). I am now looking to upgrade the 18-55 to something much better.
- very happy with 55-200 was a solid purchase for me, vr does make a difference in the right situationCultr

Its OK, not amazing at either extremes. Depends what your gonna be using it for. Get the VR if you do get one.

i got the nikon 18-55 and the 55-200... pretty impressed with the quality there both really light so i find them easy to travel with.

70-200 is a good choice (bit pricey may be good idea to go for Sigma) and combine this with a few prime lenses particularly a 20mm and 50mm which you can pick up at a fairly reasonable cost.
- mind you once you start using primes, its difficult to go back to zoomGhostschool
- can't wait for the day I get a 50/1.4... and a body that has its own af motorCultr
- great lens, (some argue thats all you need)Ghostschool

i was just filtering nikon and this came up. i have a 18-200mm VR and it's decent. i take it everywhere when i travel. it's a nice walk-around lens for sure. it's not perfect but VR does a pretty good job and having the range is great. it's definitely a lazy photographer lens like myself.
now, i am looking at 35mm f2.0 as a every day walk around.

"I have no clue about photography"
Took classes in college, never really learned about lenses and such, more about developing and composition.
Feel better?

i didn't want to offend you so hopefully no harm feelings but still it's like saying "i know how to paint but what's a brush?".
