And a 'Design Director' is? And a 'Creative' is?
I've met them in big agencies but not really understood what they are compared to 'Art Directors' or 'Designers'.

design director is the guy who oversees the minutae of the design process, ensuring that all pixels are pushed and the typography is spot on. usually works closely with the art director.
'creative' is a term applied to the teams of art directors and copywriters that you find in ad agencies. they're officially 'creative teams' even though they each have their own title, but it often gets shortened to 'creatives'. sometimes you get a creative team that is something other than one ad plus one copywriter, but that's the norm. they come up with the overall concept for a campaign and then ensure that it's produced to the right standards.

It was a guy called a 'Creative'. I think maybe he just was pulled in to jobs at the beginning to come up with concepts and solve problems. Jobs were broken down into (20 hours - designers x2) (8hrs senior designer) (8hrs creative) (8hrs design director) etc. Branding agency rather than ad agency tho.

Creative Directors are like Mr. Miyagi. Wax on. Wax off. Fancy classic cars. The vision and patience of a saint. Designers are the Karate Kid. Excitable, young and up for a battle, but aimless like a ship with sails lost on the high sees.

Creative talks out direction/concept. Art Director Executes visually.

Depends on where you work. In my experience:
CD- Sleazy wheeler and dealer/co-opter of other people's ideas as he drowns under the pressure of being creatively responsible. Makes decisions from a place of fear.
AD- Glorified designer who spends half the time trying to keep projects not already shot down from loosing their potency as they are modified beyond recognition by idiots. Makes decisions from a place of hope.
Designer - Moves shit around on the screen. Is kept out of meetings. Throws poop around cubicle. Makes decisions that are unheard.
