hey akrok and akoni .. yes i'm in la since october. it's so much better than the southern east coast!
when i started my freelance job search here i didn't get much response but then it completely turned into my having to turn down jobs and agencies outbidding one another for me. i had no idea of my worth prior to this so i really appreciate everyone's help. now i feel i'm ripping people off. :p
- you can ref them to me. ;-)akrokdesign
- glad to hear its going great.akrokdesign
- i will do that, akrok. how is it going with you?_salisae_

Didn't know you were in LA Shari ?!

pixel_pimp,
i would not quit to go freelance unless you got enough of your own clients to make it. hopefully they don't just need you ones and thats it.

here is an article from mad.co.uk, its British but I guess its relevant,

so how do you know when to go freelance? I mean the scene for freelance motion graphics people is hot or so it seems. I have lot of people asking me to do work. I work full time and am doing the 3am posse action. I am just trying to figure out when do I quit the day job and go freelance? Does it matter that there is a recession? OR maybe I should just keep the day job and run as much as I can at night.
- holla LBC!akrokdesign
- i use to live down there. :-)
akrokdesign - who's in the LBC? I live on 2nd street in Belmont... Hollaz at me !!akoni
- fu...i used to be at park ave, right after 2nd street. (belmont shore) man, it was nice.akrokdesign
- ah you miss me and the area don't you? where are you now?akoni

- JackRyan0
A nice dinner, drinks afterwards, maybe a foot massage.
- yeah?_salisae_
- Depending on the scope of the project of course. ;)JackRyan
- you and your gal making your way out to LA soon?_salisae_
- I don't know yet. We both want to get out of here. I might get a gig where I could live anywhere, so if thats the case. I'll be out there soon.JackRyan

very good point, joyride. i have a meeting tomorrow with a company. i think i will have to write them off as an experiment in negotiation and expect they will not accept my asking rate.
- joyride0
_sal_ remember, most clients will negotiate rate but not hours, so whatever you decide, just make sure the hours get you the money you want.

Thank you, Carlos :)
It's difficult for me to determine .. I've got a lot of experience, I paid quite a bit for my education and I have skills in a lot of areas but I'm not sure what that translates to hourly. I just read an article about how women have the most trouble with determining their worth.
If it were salary I'd be happy making 70-80 per year with benefits.
- mrLarios0
You have some pretty nice work! You should charge per hour. Most design firms in LA charge per hour. What do you think you are worth in an hourly scale?
- _salisae_0
yep, i was working with Turner but wanted to move to LA so I took the first job I interviewed with. I had numerous grievances with them so now I am gainfully unemployed :)
- grunttt0
yeah, weren't you with adult swim? or was that a long time ago?
- Randd0
You left your job? What happened? I mean, WTF?
- _salisae_0
with basically half going to taxes, no coverage and working with my own equipment 65/hr isn't crazy, right? 85? let's talk figures.
- yeah. 85 is good. 65 for production.antigirl
- thank you, antigirl :)_salisae_
- yeah - range from 50-75/hr - though the cost of living here is lowbulletfactory
- robotron3k0
as I encourage all designers, work towards making 5k per week, if you fall short you're still doing well....
- CALLES0
i believe its called Le Freelance
- antigirl0
thats the best thing about freelance, you pick your rates. if they do not like them they can go to another freelancer. kind of like dope slingin. it's a brilliant hustle, when it works.. when it doesn't, you're all sorts of poor however.
- haha. guess i've got to get my fish tank platforms outta hock._salisae_
