it depends on the designer, and your ability to negotiate.
If you have no work, you are charging to much.
If you are swamped, then you are too cheap.

there is a reason the word free is in freelance

AIGA?

to be honest call a few recruitment companies and check out their sites and you will see what they advertise the rate at. add a bit above that when going direct to the company

thats the best thing about freelance, you pick your rates. if they do not like them they can go to another freelancer. kind of like dope slingin. it's a brilliant hustle, when it works.. when it doesn't, you're all sorts of poor however.
- haha. guess i've got to get my fish tank platforms outta hock._salisae_

as I encourage all designers, work towards making 5k per week, if you fall short you're still doing well....

with basically half going to taxes, no coverage and working with my own equipment 65/hr isn't crazy, right? 85? let's talk figures.
- yeah. 85 is good. 65 for production.antigirl
- thank you, antigirl :)_salisae_
- yeah - range from 50-75/hr - though the cost of living here is lowbulletfactory

You left your job? What happened? I mean, WTF?
- grunttt0
yeah, weren't you with adult swim? or was that a long time ago?

yep, i was working with Turner but wanted to move to LA so I took the first job I interviewed with. I had numerous grievances with them so now I am gainfully unemployed :)

You have some pretty nice work! You should charge per hour. Most design firms in LA charge per hour. What do you think you are worth in an hourly scale?
- _salisae_0
Thank you, Carlos :)
It's difficult for me to determine .. I've got a lot of experience, I paid quite a bit for my education and I have skills in a lot of areas but I'm not sure what that translates to hourly. I just read an article about how women have the most trouble with determining their worth.
If it were salary I'd be happy making 70-80 per year with benefits.

_sal_ remember, most clients will negotiate rate but not hours, so whatever you decide, just make sure the hours get you the money you want.

very good point, joyride. i have a meeting tomorrow with a company. i think i will have to write them off as an experiment in negotiation and expect they will not accept my asking rate.
