"US living standards, which have been stagnant for years, will plummet once dollar decline forces China off the dollar peg. So far prices of the Chinese-made goods on Wal-Mart shelves have not risen, because the Chinese currency, pegged to the dollar, falls in value with the dollar. In a word, tottering US living standards are being supported by China’s willingness to subsidize US consumption by keeping its currency grossly undervalued."
March 12, 2008, Paul Craig Roberts, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration. Former Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal editorial page and Contributing Editor of National Review.

"All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al Qaeda, in order to make generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic and political losses without their achieving anything of note other than some benefits for their private corporations," bin Laden said.

Do you guys realize that municipalities have funded their operation and pension plans with reams of this bad paper? The town where my mom lives is closing the local library, can't afford to fix potholes and has announced that the pension fund for retired city workers might be gone. Seriously, and each time a referendum comes up in the local election to raise local taxes all the local Republicans toe the party line and are like "All the welfare queens are getting free money!" Jesus. It's like the fucking blind. Where is the money going to come from for police, fire, sanitation? For road maintenance? And all the citizenry thing somehow that paying no taxes is ideal. Unreal. There is no sense of the Common Good anywhere anymore here. You know, you get what you pay for and that works for governments too.

Today:
"The federal government and JPMorgan Chase & Co. teamed up on a bailout of Bear Stearns Cos. on Friday, a last-ditch move to save the investment bank, which acknowledged its dire financial straits after a week of firm denials. Bear Stearns lost half of its value within 30 minutes of the market open."

Yesterday:
"Bear Stearns Cos (BSC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Chief Executive Alan Schwartz on Wednesday dismissed recurring speculation that the investment bank faces a cash crunch, saying it has hefty cash reserves that have remained little changed this year."

not sure how $600 is going to change anything. i guess ppl will go spend it on things they don't need. oh and gas of course.
- cosmoo0
make sure you spend it only on american products, otherwise it would be unpatriotic.
- The ones made in china, or the ones made...oh..nevermind...TheBlueOne

- DUKIE08220
if you are truly upset with the governments irresponsibile spending then you should return your check in protest
- jonatne0
Even if people spend it on things they don't need it will help.
The worst thing people can do with that money is buy more debt.Paying off debt directly will help as well.
$600 may not be alot individually but $600 for everyone will (correction: could) make a big difference on the economy.
Best thing to do is take that money and pay off debt, if you don't have debt buy a product made buy a company who's trying to do something good. Buy local, buy from companies who are charitable.
- acescence0
paulson claims that your $600 checks will create 500,000-600,000 jobs, all in the check-cashing industry i suppose.
- jonatne0
Well that seems a bit on the best case scenario end. But it does have potential to do a lot of good.

The Republican $600 (Tax Relief Plan)
$600 @ $45- a week for gas for your car = 3 months of gas for your car.
All your tax relief money that will go into the pockets of Saudi Arabia and Russia. All patriotic and thankful all Americans should be.
Thank you George W. Bush, Jr.
