OK, another question for my compatriots across the pond. Anyone know anything about this SailRail operation? http://www.sailrail.co.uk/ I got the link from The National Rail website and there is precious little information and I'm not all that unsure the train wouldn't take me back to 1997 if I got on it.
Does anyone know how much it would cost for 2 people to get from London to Dublin on 23 May? Could someone find out for me?

If you do go Ryan Air be sure and get the priority boarding. They dont give out seat numbers, so it's a first come first serve basis. Can be a bit of a shitfight getting on the plane as people barge to get a good seat (why it matters i dont know as your only in the plane for an hour)
Priority boarding means you get on first without the shit fight and it only costs a few quid extra.

RyanAir are fine for an hour. There's only one public Airport in Dublin where you can land so everyone fly's into that one. You should be very quick getting through the airport as our security is a man waving you through. Flying back the other way (leaving Ireland) can take a lot longer depending on the weekend. Give yourself an hour to get through the security check alone or two if you are flying to America from Dublin as you go through Immigration in Dublin. Alternativley you could travel Ireland and finish in the West (Kerry, Galway, Aran Islands etc) where you can fly from Shannon. Ireland although it is small can be a pain to drive around as our roads are smaller.

About the sailrail thing:
I did that for my parents, since they flew to ireland and then they went here to england. Was definitely straightforward:
Went to a london station (liverpool street) and then asked for a train-ship-train ticket from dublin to london which costed £23 per person.
And obviously that included booking for the irish train (dubiln-dublin harbor) the boat and the british train from holyhead to London.
On the latter they got two options: a virgin train with no changes or another one with one change. The price was the same, the only difference was the departure time.
It's really super simple. And the whole trip took 8 hours. (if you get the perfect timing it can last 6:30 hours)I don't think that the price is affected too much by the days you choose to travel. I did that one month earlier and was fine.
Unluckily enough, there is no chance to buy/book this online.
You got to visit a ticket shop in the station.

You get to appreciate the mediterranean-like approach to life of the Irish at the Dublin Airport, quite conforming after UK or US departures.

just punch them when they try and sell you ryanair scratch cards / calendars.
"any refreshmentssssssssss"

that's the bad part about flying with them..
kaufen Sie ein, halten Sie ein frei!.
compra uno e riserva el segondo gratis!

ahahaha, so true.
But after a while flying with them it becomes quite buzznoise
or even pleasant noise, since you associate that with "coming back home" / going on holiday / something good.

i use sail rail when going home to ireland from the UK. Just check the timings work for you though. Also consider the travelling time/costs/hassle plus check-ins to and from airports.
Personally I think if you visit a country for the first time travelling overland train/bus/boat gives you a better perspective....

I think http://www.flybe.com flies to Dublin. From regional airports only but they're dirt cheap.

All over this bitch. I got a self drive package with a car and a fistfull of bed and breakfast vouchers. Probably be in Dublin for my first and last nights there then touring the rest of the Emerald Isle for the remainder of the time. Probably be in Belfast second night. Doesn't seem like anything is too far from anything else there.
