Thanks in advance to anyone who answers my questions throughout the weekend.
Got my MPB last night and before I went to bed I started copying over my music from my pc. Networked to it correctly, could see shared drives, chose all my music (42 GB) and watched it copy a few GB. Went to bed.
Got up this morning and it stopped at 8.93 GB and had some kind of message about a bad file or something.
Now I can't stop copying, or restart it It just keeps showing that it's copying, but nothing is actually copying.
Need to close this down. Is there a way to stop processes?

if you hold apple alt and esc you should get a force quit window which will allow you to stop apps and also relaunch the finder which should solve this

Thanks. It was Finder that was running, so it restarted the whole thing.
Really liking this so far, just takes a while to get used to things.

Here's another question.
When I installed Firefox, it put it on the desktop and it looked like a disc drive, below the Macintosh HD. When I click it, another boxk comes up where I have to select it again. Then it opens and appears in the dock.
It's like it installed on the desktop or something. When I restarted it was not in the dock but it is once I opened it.

And how the hell do I make the fonts look more crisp?

read the fucking manual

mg33... to fully install the app, make sure you drag the app from the disk image into your applications folder. from that point, you can drag the icon from your applications folder onto your dock and it will automagically created an alias to the actual app in your apps folder.
did that make sense?

as for fonts, go to your system preferences and select appearance. look at the font smoothing styles at the bottom.

Any suggestions on the best or most useful way to copy my music over from the PC? I have the connection established, but should it go directly into the Music>itunes>itunes Music folder?
- MediaPimp0
hmm... open itunes, go to your preferences, click advanced, make sure 'copy files to itunes blah blah blah' is selected. now go to the file menu and select add to library. select the folder in which your current music collection is and click open. it will automatically copy all of your music over to your MBP as well as add them into itunes. i would recommend doing this over ethernet if your library is large.

MediaPimp - somehow that uninstalled Firefox completely.

hmm... do you have ichat setup? if so, my AIM is . hit me on there.

was it installed at all?..
- mg330
Thanks mediapimp, I might do that.
Just downloaded firefox again. It put it on the desktop as a disk image, and when I click it a new box comes up with the firefox logo, a globe, and a folder with an A on it. Looks like it opened my previous install. But i can't remove that Firefox disk image from the desktop.
- Eject it! (It is in effect a temporary drive, that you have to drag the application out of...)ribit

haha... that's one of the things I don't like a bout macs... there is multiple ways to install apps. most of the time, after you download the .dmg file, it will open, then drag the application icon into the applications folder and it's installed. I've done the same thing with FF before.
Oh and you'll miss the windows taskbar. Learn to use Apple-tab to see your running applications.
- you can tell what's open from the dock! there's a little blip underneath all opened apps to tell you what's running...bruised_blood

Something interesting:
I got the 120 GB hard drive version. Info about the Mac says it has a 149.05 GB drive. What's up with that?
- MediaPimp0
when did they ship it?
- MediaPimp0
you more than likely got the newer version of the MBP which comes with a minimum 200gb HD now.
- mg330
It was a refurb, shipped on the 27th. 2.2 Ghz core 2 duo
Came with 2 GB ram and a 120 gig drive.
I have to say, refurbs are great. Aside from the cardboard box, it was like it was brand new. I'm no fanboy, but it was really nice opening something I have high expectations for. In fact, I'm typing right now on my PC and I can tell that the Mac is blazingly fast in comparison. Just hooked up my mouse and BT mac keyboard (which is going to take some getting used to) and now just need to hook up to my 21" Dell widescreen after itunes is done copying.
- I just got the same thing, and I'm loving it...now I just need a tablet and the 4gig ram upgradeDUKIE0822
