Where have all the web designers gone? When i started ten years ago they were coming out of everywhere. But now we try and recruit i cant find many/any. Or am i not offering enough? 26k is not bad for manchester i thought. Ive been told that all the good designers got o london to walk the gold paved streets ... is it true?

no london is a waste of time.
manchester is way better and alot less waiting for stuff. the only good thing about london is that it has amazing design companies like hi-res and poke. but so has manc.

I would guess that if you're into high-end retail, fashion, cultural projects or large global brands than London has more to offer...

if your into stamping your mark on a company and being given design freedom not dictated by a sales team then our company is the pleace to be ... not hi end at the moment but thats not a bad thing when your truly get to design!

i guess its nice to be able to tell you mates you worked on the "whatever" project ... but how much input does your average designer have into the project? ... anyway were looking for a designer who wants to design, who want to steer a path and who wants to have their suggestions listened to!

Its like that though, it ebbs and flows, most people have meetings at the same time regardless of who they work for and what industry. There's a natural rhythm to a working day. Its just been lunchtime. Nobody gets back and sits straight down to QBN, people need to look like they're back at the front line, grafting for the man. 2.20pm, the posts will start to flow once more.

does it realy depend on the client base Leigh? why is that i wonder? if you got the same wage in two companies but one company worked for the little people and the other company worked for bigshots you choose bigshots ... it looks good. However given the choice of big cog in small machine or small cog in big machine ... id choose the former.

I took the position I currently hold now because I knew it would be my opportunity to fix a broken company, to mold it the way I wanted to... I gave up the sexy clients and 'proper design studio' to try something different...
There are many moments of agony and some regrets but overall it's allowed me to grow and develop more well-rounded skills that I never would've developed so quickly in a studio environment where I was ruled by the iron fist of another art director...
