how can a designer design a website if he dosent know what he is going to put in the site? or am i asking the wrong question?
I see a web designer (not a graphic designer) as sombody who can listen to a clients brief and come up with a solution and suggest ideas for making the site useable, engaging and interesting. If a web designer dosent know whats out there how can they make a design for it?
- but you aren't describing someone who can code AJAX, surely?kelpie
- so its a web 'developer' you are looking for, im out of touch with rates is 26K enuff?FallowDeer
- trooper0
26k is crap
the problem is that x years ago we'd all work for peanuts and for the love of the work whereas nowerdays we've all got mortgages and kids and know that agencies are raking it in off our backs.
we're more savvy
let me guess you want a designer with seo, photoshop, illustrator, quark, dreamweaver, flash 3d studio max etc etc etc... all for the tiny sum of 25k... people that tallented have been snapped up by people who appreciate people with this much tallent!
i should know... used to run my own agency!
- asonejoel0
why dont you run your own agency now?
- Leigh0
AJAX is extra data is requested from the server and loaded in the background without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page. What the hell does that have to do with designing a site.
- asonejoel0
you gotta know how your going to deliver the data ... a designer can go mad creating amazing content but without the knowledge they are makeing it hard for the developers and if that extra headache haned been acocunted for in the project the project overruns and if the project overruns th profit is lost and it the profit is lost the designer gets no pay rise and all work and no pay makes desinger sad :(
- agreed, but that said, it's best a designer work hand in hand with a coder...neue75_bold
- actually only half agree, you lost it there near the end..neue75_bold
- haned been acocunted********
- i work with thomas and now i check everything on him, whether something is possible or not, or requires more effort********
- it's all about communicating clearly and be transparent about budget and options.********

if 26 is a crap wage why are there no other jobs in the design industry advertised in manchester for more than that? we are advertsign on jobs mine and we are offering the most!
maybe its all done through agencies?
- emokid0
i know this might blow everyone's mind but designers design and developers develop. i know, i ought to be charging for sharing wisdom of this nature.
- ********0
why don't you try to advertise on http://www.monster.co.uk ?
- asonejoel0
so as a designer you come up with all your work without regard for how that will be built?
so a graphic designer creates a brochure design for example without thought for the paer i will be printed on?
come on ... that would be a designers dream not reality
- that should be "paper it will be printed on" duh ... got new lights in studio and dust is in my keyboard!!!asonejoel
- r u the MD by any chanceWeLoveNoise
- yep ... :) what gave it awayasonejoel

lets put it a simple way. A web designer/Art director dreams or almost lives the idea (they have to show some passion for what they are doing), and a developer (having a difficult part of the bargain at times) has to realise the dream and make it happen. Now with the two collaborating together side by side, through thick and think, this is when ones expertise works with the other, and thats where the good stuff happens. Fine, its a job for the designer to possibly understand the constraints (or is there any), but its your own responsibility to push your own limits, the same for the developer. So technically anything is possible.
- asonejoel0
no doubt technically anything is possible ... never was that a question. I guess I am asking the wrong question then. What should i be asking? I want sombody who can think a project through to the end, they dont have to programme it or do the database work but to know how they want it to end up and know the limitations of the budget (as far as i can tell thats the only thing that limits a project) ... So the new qustion is ... What is that role called?
- i dont think it mattered if ur new question was "does anyone want a choccy biscuit"
your'd get a debate.WeLoveNoise - depends if thats an asda's own brand chocy biscuit or cadburys? :)FallowDeer
- hobnobsWeLoveNoise
- Jaffa Cakes, come on...
(now are they cake or biscuit? thats an interesting question)mds - dnt start with thats shit
def a cake and i'm not up for listening to any other opinions about itWeLoveNoise - cake! ita all about the VAT ... jaffa bics would be subject to VAT ... jaffa "cakes" arnt!asonejoel
- nothin to do with the fact that it has a sponge textureWeLoveNoise
- difference between a biscuits & cakes: biscuits go soft when stale, cakes go hard...vespa
- never had jaffa cakes lying around long enough to test this mind...vespa

- i dont think it mattered if ur new question was "does anyone want a choccy biscuit"
- mds0
thats a big ask...
... although I think i does depend on experience.
