Photoshop anomaly

Does anyone remember a few weeks ago a number of us here all simultaneously discovered out Photoshop eye droppers had switched automatically to background use and we couldn't switch it back?
Well, I wonder if anyone has noticed since Friday that the pen tool no longer draws a data-less vector line but instead when trying to use the pen tool it creates a new layer, fills it with whatever colour is in the foreground palette and then draws a vector mask with the pen tool, frequently making it impossible to see where to put the next bezier point?
If I'm on my own with this one, can anyone advise how I switch back so my pen toold just draws a path in the path's palette? Its driving me nuts bolts AND screws.
