Hawking would argue that the very stuff of chronology would conspire to prevent you being able to kill your grandfather, thereby forestalling any paradox.
Hold on - you said father, right? Whoa *backs off* you gots issues.

Wow, that is pretty early to set up an April Fools hoax.

Side note:
Speaking of time travel, it really pissed me off in that one Star Trek movie, the one where they're fighting the Borg guys, how flippantly they deal with time travel. Time travel is treated like just another option, a slightly more inconvenient one, but still just another option.
At the beginning of the movie, when this vortex type thing is opened, it's just assumed that they time traveled, and darnit, we're gonna follow them.
They all treat this with the exact same tone and attitude as if a character was saying "Aha! He must have taken exit 5, so he can just use all the back roads to get to the mall."

* something I've had on my mind for a couple of years, but not the wit to fully explain it (what was it Einstein said about truly undestanding something and being able to concisely explain it..?)
Anyway, from a slashdot article on the most recent perpetual machine you tube..
"Thermodynamics just says you can't win when you're talking about the whole Universe. Once you start to get into smaller sections of it you can increase organization locally but it is always at the expense of more global energies. Life here on Earth is an example of this - we're more organized but the Sun pumps out a lot of wasted energy to feed that organization. It's entirely possible that some kind of machine could be built to extract energy locally which ultimately has a global source but that does not mean its perpetual, the Universe will still wind down total energy wise in the global space."
I would add to this that we might have the full potential of zero point vacuum energy to mine and possibly energy stores in alternate dimensions to prospect for - so, in sum - locally, on Earth, we could certainly have what would ostensibly appear to be a 'perpetual energy machine'. Heck, harnessing gravity, in the form of wave power's almost like that, from out tiny little perspective.

Yes to that I think. Energy can't be created it can only be transposed or converted from potentiality to kinesis. So when we use energy, we only take it from one source and apply it soemwhere else, and the by-products of that energy use hold an equal value of universal energy, just in a different way that we don't exploit. Hobart's Principle of Balance or something... the total sum of the universal energy is never depleted or increased by localised energy fluctuations. Energy merely rushes to a scene or rushes away from it, to somewhere else.

Exactly, our understanding and our slice of the pie is such that our reaction to 'perpetual motion' devices would be the same as that of your Mayan, unable to comprehend the sailboats coming across the horizon.

Oh, and by the way... sorry I'm late with my FIT entry, err, only I miscalculated when exactly this time-travel thread would be generated, so its, err, only now that I can present my own personal response to the first brief which was "That's where it all began" and in this case, what I've drawn is the first time travelling device that was invented in secret during World War2, or something, of course, and.. so. There you go, I produced a piece of work AND I tied it, quite enigmatically, into this here conversation. That's where it all began....
Or maybe it was just something I thought of as I ate my sandwich just now, or something. I cant find the FIT thread. Did it get removed?

Time travel is theoretically achievable in terms of speed for example 60 miles an hour double that 120 miles an hour which means you travel 1 mile in 30 seconds if you keep going you get closer and closer to zero however this cannot be used to guage time travel as distance isn't a function it is essentially an instance or a relic of time which you would like to achieve so pin point accuracy in a destination is a prerequisite.
However all this is nonsense because a reaction in anything takes time however small that amount of time is.
