I need to get a better file system down. Between different studios and colleagues, the file organization methods used differ greatly and each has their benefits. I want to get a good system for myself to use outside work. Anyone got some useful insights into this?

I personally find that I end up with tons of duplicate files when copying stuff around between work / home and laptop / desktop etc...
If you're on a PC, this is pretty handy:

Thanks, but yeah thats my problem also. I guess what im looking for is just some useful way of organizing files, naming (instead of the usual xx_1, or xx_final_9 kind of thing) etc. but not necessarily an app for it. Im on mac btw.

Clientname_project (folder)
Clientname_project_b01a.ext (builds)
Clientname_project_b01b.ext
Clientname_project_b02a.extClientname_project.ext (final)
... works good for me.

I tend to name like this:
Client
- Project
- Asset (Design, Renderings, Cad, Documents)
- Date_File name (I don't like relying on assigned dates, gets screwy when you grab archived files off of disks)That's worked for years, but certainly ain't perfect.

always ammend the date to every file...
clientname_project_100208a.ext
clientname_project_100208b.ext
clientname_project_100208c.extWorks for me..
