My bros superdrive in his macbook is reading and writing DVD's ok but not CD's.
Anybody know wether it can be plugged into a Macbook's USB port?
- MediaPimp0
It can't

shite!
- mirrorball0
really?
- you want to plug the Air into the MacBook? or other way round?madirish
- Raniator0
nope. for macbook air only. shit eh?
- mirrorball0
yep totally! shite!

I like apple stuff, have done for a while, but seriously, that macbook air thing has got to be the most overpriced, over-hyped and under-spec'd laptop ever. EVER.
Jobs, you've ballsed it up this time, my friend.
- same sort of thing was said about the iPod and then the iPod mini to be fairmodern

that's strange...
MacBook Air SuperDrive (MB397G/A)
Play or burn discs directly with the external USB-based MacBook Air SuperDrive. Thin, light, and easy to take with you, this drive is designed specifically for MacBook Air.
* Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

I'd have to agree with yah there, but put it this way... if that is the computer before the Macbook Pro imagine what the new ones are going to look like!!!! Cant fecking wait!
- Jaline0
I'm interested in the new Pros now too.
But yeah, the Air is very disappointing. I guess it's okay for traveling people who REALLY need a Mac.

There is a very good reason the superdrive only works on the Air, its because the Air has a special very high power usb port so the superdrive doesn't require an additional power plug, thus adding to the bulk of carrying it around.
The whole idea is to reduce the weight and footprint a laptop has on your luggage, a power adapter for the external drive would take the piss.Besides no other mac should ever need one

i will never understand the argument you put forth, Jaline and Raniator. the time of "REALLY needing a Mac" is over- it is a computer, plain and simple. it also, happens to be for a very clear segment of the market that:
a) do not give a fuck about maintenance of their computer as they pay numbers of people to do it for them
b) do not care what it cost, as they pay numbers of people to support that income levelwhy is that such a dense practice? do you honestly feel that this computer, or all Macs for that matter, are designed and targeted to designers/hipsters/solo types? do you not think that there are a vast number of users that actually want something that is about presence and delivery? i probably know 20 people who have bought the Air or have one on order.
I would absolutely be making the same argument also, if Sony, Toshiba, or any other non-Mac company made the same offering.
Sorry for the slight rant, but i guess some have just drank too much of the juice.

I think I am just saying that it is overpriced. There are probably smaller machines you can get (with more features) for a better price. But this is the only Mac one, hence my comment about how mainly tech people, travelers, people who need a Mac machine, and/or people with money will buy this.
- Jaline0
Of course, everyone will go out and buy it, just as they did with the iPod and the iPhone. I suspect the price will go down, but I have always felt that Apple things are overpriced.
- Jaline0
Anyway, I'm not sure why I got into this again. I like Apple products. The company just bothers me sometimes.
- madirish0
but do you see how it is not overpriced for a very large segment of the laptop-using population?? especially those issued computers at the executive level in large corps? they could really care less about "smaller machines you can get (with more features) for a better price" as it means nothing to them.
- I know. I think I was just delusional in thinking that Apple may care about the not-so-rich people.Jaline
- lol- but not all their products are for same demographic, no? that would be suicide as a product company.madirish
- i agree with the point, not necessarily that well off people will buy it because they are well off. you can...Raniator
- ...have too many toys.Raniator
- Actually, many of their products are like this...Jaline
- Raniator0
i didn't say 'really need a mac'. a computer is a computer, correct. i like os x, you can't run that (very well, legally, whatever) on a windows pc. so i use macs.
if you got shit loads of cash to spunk on the air then good on you. i on the other hand have better things to spend £2000.
well done you for having so many rich friends.
- Raniator0
ENOUGH!
There, I shouted.
- Jaline0
mirrorball's original question was answered quite promptly. I am impressed :)
