My partner and I are trying to figure out how to share files that we are working on for clients. He currently resides in a different city about 2.5 hours away.
Is there a way to connect to each other's computers so we can get files from each other using an IP address or another way?
Thanks in advance!

What platform, and roughly what size of files?
Have you tried basic file transfer with an IM client, like Skype?

We are both currently running 10.4 OS. File sizes range pretty differently. Is Skype a free service??
I was able to mount his computer to my desktop, but I was unable to get into the Hard drive.
I actually had a client today say they had a file that would not go through our e-mail because it was too large and we don't currently have an FTP set up or we would obviously share files that way with each other and clients.

if your friend can connect to your machine, so can other unwelcome persons. an ftp server would be a good solution i think
- True, which is why we would only turn it on when we were in need of file sharingrodzilla

A good free short term solution for sending files to clients is Div share (http://www.divshare.com/)
There are a bunch of other free file hosting services, this is just the one I use.
- Thanks, what is the MAX file size you can transfer??

* ah. I didn't realise you meant sharing files between yourselves and client. Anyway. Yes, your client could just set up a free Skype account. However, if it's for client, I'd instead recommend investing in webspace somewhere, then getting your FTP thang on. For your client to upload, you can get some dropbox software and send it to them to use. I'm not sure what the Mac equivalent is, but on PC you (or rather, they) can use Tango Dropbox, which allows you to set up a small executable file which the client can just drop files onto to upload, without screwing with your server... http://etonica.com/dropbox/downl… . I use it and recommend it.
- That said, I'm not sure how effective this is for treble digit filesizes, if that's your bag.detritus
- Yeah, we definitely need to get some space setup for sure. this is the first we've run into this problem with a client.
rodzilla - Our other problem is sharing files we are currently working on with each other, so the best solution seems to be getting our (as you would say) FTP thang on....rodzilla
- Thanks for your help.

I usually use the command line for this, but I believe something like cyberduck would work as well if you prefer a GUI. first, you have to turn on remote login (ssh) in prefs > sharing, then you have to generate an encryption key, then you should be able to set up an SSH tunnel and SFTP to the remote machine(s) with cyberduck. i think there's a how-to on their site. all encrypted, and a password is never sent out in the open.

Turn on File Sharing on the Mac doing the sharing..
In Finder, Go > Connect to Server
enter IP address
other drive mounts on desktop
(assuming you have firewall set right, and port 548 forwarded to the Mac, if behind a router)- we did this, but I couldn't access his "desktop" or anything. I saw two folders, but can't remember what they are.
rodzilla - did you log in as a user or a guest? you prob saw the public folder if just a gueststupidresponse
- You need to login as them (with their user/pass), or get them to setup an account on the mac for youribit
- otherwise you only have access to their dropbox folderribit
- did that, there must have been one minor detail we over looked.rodzilla

you might find it simpler to go buy a NAS drive and share that to anyone on local network or internet who has the IP address and login details?
