when in vietnam, try to find one of the 'easy-riders' these guys generally speak great english and can show you a whole lot more then any guidebook.. so hop on the back on of of their mopeds for sure. I took a week long journey with two of them from dalat all the way to hoi an. Citywise i would prefer Hanoi over Ho Chi Min City any day... when ther try to hook up with the Hanoi Kids, students who are great guides and people! In Laos i can recommend Lung nam Tha.. absolutly beautifull and peacefull.

I had the best time in Koh Tao 3 years ago. Not sure how it is now there. But you would have to stay there for sometime in order to get the feeling.
Another thing I recommend, take a hill tribe trek in the north for a couple of days ( Chan Mai, Chan Rai). Elephant rides, water rafting, staying over night with an opium tribe is something to remember.

Koh tao is beautiful, dark green water with lots of flintstone like rocks dotted around the coast. and koh phangan is great. i didn't really enjoy bangkok too but amazing shopping there!

Yep, been to Nam, great time and I just stayed for two weeks on my own. I think I did the wrong part of the country as I stayed mainly in the south. Ho Chi Minh isn't that great to be honest, but I think that's because I flew in there and didn't have time to decompress properly from London! I went to Mui Ne which was nice and quiet then Na Trang which is the place to party and meet chicks......and teh diving / snorkelling is good there too – but nowhere near as good as Koh Tao.
It gets good when you get up to the central highlands and I got as far as dalat, which is, I guess, the gateway to that part of the country. As someone said, hiring someone with a bike is the best way to see the country and if there are a couple of you you can get them to do convoys and make a proper road trip out of it. It seems to get much wilder when you get around these parts and it's a wicked, almost alpine temperature.
It sounds like the north is the place to go to see the more dignified part of the country, and the south is the place to go to party and pull.

I will avoid women men. For sure. Maybe. Unless..
How hard is it to navigate around the non-touristy spots?
I am looking forward to the non-tourist shit the most. I've been to Europe a couple times and I never really escaped those areas, so that is #1 on my list.

I'm going by myself, so. Would it be cool to buy a dog and keep it with me the whole time? Will that be an issue?

Oh man! That is awesome. I was joking but I love dogs. I will feed that little buger hamburgers and shit. Cap'n Crunch. Or what not.

I had a great time in Koh Chang last December on the way back to Melbourne, partied every single night and had to be peeled off the beach with a spatula
