my two cents-
Aeron is worth every $. I sit in the Chadwick at work all day, not meant for a larger framed person (i'm 6'3, 195 lbs), but good for smaller -medium framed peeps.
Caper is a great chair, and priced well.
Mirra- testdrive it first, some people aren't keen on the plastic back.
ebay is your friend too.
(full disclosure: I design for the fellow who did both the Aeron and Chadwick, as well as the Equa 2 as not yet cited.)

Knoll Life Chair.
Fantastic.- I'll second that. Have also had the Aeron and the Knoll Life beats itjesterlou

When it comes to "too much $$$," think about it in relation to a car. How often do you sit in your passenger seat? Assuming you aren't living in your car, you rarely sit in it, yet depending on how hoop-d your car is, you probably paid 1-2K for it.
You sit on your ass all day long, probably every day if you're reading these posts, make your ass happy.

Been sitting in that Carper 40hrs/week for 3 years. It was fine for the first year, but started to get a little annoying/uncomfortable the second. Today, I want to throw it out the window. i need an Aeron.

the aeron is not worth it IMO.
I have it at my office and it's comfortable but honestly I think I'd do just as well with a chair that was half the price.
In my experience, a good chair is about the fit. It doesn't have to be expensive, it just has to fit you and your style comfortably.

I usually stand when I'm working. I have my computer set up on a high table, and I usually stand, or sometimes use a cool old red vinyl barstool.

I am 6' and 175lb. so i think i might be okay with a chadwick chair. I think he was also one of the designers who was involved in developing the Aeron chair.

yep, my thought was that over time, it loosened up and felt "cheap".

The_CCG,
so what is the best chair you recommend for around $500? chadwick?
- The_CCG0
well, for $500, that might be your best option. The other thing is to work any contacts you might have in the interiors / architecture world. The Architecture+Design discount for the Aeron, fully pimped out with the Posture-fit deal is somewhere around $600. Depending on what you do for a living, or what your boss does, you might be able to talk to the rep directly.... be creative.
The problem I have with the Chadwick is that it really has no lumbar to speak of, the mesh isn't taught enough for me. Plus, on this chair, I tend to do the super recline, so my lower back just hangs out there w.out support to it. I use a memory foam lumbar pad (http://www.relaxtheback.com/tem... to compensate.
I don't slouch like that in the Aeron... Remember, thing LONG term on this one.
Also, look into tall pneumatics if you have long legs, on most chairs you can option them.
