i'm sure this has been covered, but i was curious if any of you PC users have advice or experience with vista especially now that the first service pack is out
my girlfriend is in the market for an affordable laptop, but most vendors sell only vista. xp is getting harder to find
subquestion: anyone recommend an (extremly affordable) laptop. were talking basic basic functions. no online gaming or 3d modeling / video software
most appreciated. especially the vista experiences/ concerns/comments

don't upgrade...
... buy a new vista-ready machine... you should be fine... but:
Do... Not... Upgrade.:)
It's not worth the headache your more than surely will encounter.

I use vista
For old PC users it takes a bit of getting used to.. But for new less experienced PC users it is really intuitive and user friendly.
Despite what everyone says.
And as for an inexpensive notebook.. Try http://www.dell.com/content/prod…

SP1 is not released, you can get the release candidate if you want but I would wait.
Take the time to customize it, my copy of home premium never bugs me about anything any more and I limited the amount of space system restore is allowed to use.
You can usually get a Dell pretty cheap. Price out what you want and call on the weekend. You will be more likely to get someone in the States instead of Mumbai. If you call and know what you want you might be able to strike a deal. They are allowed to give a certain number of deals a day and you can often get a much better price than what you are quoted on the web site.
I priced out a laptop speced a little more muscular than a MacBook Pro and she called with the details and informed them that for the price she was more likely to go with the mac. They ended up dropping the price by a few hundred bucks and giving her credit towards the dell store to buy add ons.

Newegg is great for finding deals on all sorts of computer equipment.

My only advice is if you are going with Vista make sure you get enough RAM - at least 1 Gig, but more would be better.
- your right about the RAM but you can adjust settings to make it use less memoryjonatne

I've found Vista a much nicer experience than XP. Maybe I just like the eye candy but it's worked fine for me over the last 7 months or so.

I've been using Vista the last week or so... so glad i switched to Mac, when I had the choice of going to either Vista or OSX...
It is awful... you're blocked from doing anything for the first week, and slowly just end up saying... yes, yes 'unblock' 'unblock' until you end up with an unsecure system like xp, but half as fast and with ugly shadows on everything!
- You are aware you can simply turn that confirmation button off in your admin settings right?jamble

I still like XP and the Mac OS more, but I haven't used Vista enough to comment a great deal about it.

I was using it over the Christmas period and I completely agree with Jonatne. If you're not new to PCs, it will drive you potty. It's clunky, fussy - a pain to fiddle with, doesn't really offer any new OS improvements that real computer users care about (file copying, easy customisation), makes you wary of amending anything and will quite possibly simply not work with some Not Really That Old legacy hardware.
On the other hand, it load quickly and will allow my father to rotate pictures from his digital camera fairly easily. Ooh, and it's shiny.
I'm seriously not looking forward to my next machine upgrade.

I think for a new-comer Vista is better structured (hd folder tree) than XP and it includes view options that can make it run faster. It's an heavier system so don't go too cheap on the machine because you'll need a swift processor after the system settles and starts creating its own files. Installing programmes takes forever though, but if you are a medium-level user it won't kill you.

It's not even the OSX, it's just I couldn't find a nicer, thinner laptop on the market than a macbook. I wanted a dell or a lenovo but they just seemed too bulky.
I always liked macs but somehow never liked using the os for work. I actually bought a macbook for upcoming vista a year and a half ago, expecting it to be the shit. Then I threw out the vista release candidate an hour after installing it. Installed both XP and OSX on the mac but it turns out I rarely get to use XP anymore.

yah SP1 beta is out but not stable (had to format my disk to remove it... it stopped ie/ff/ftp/irc working)
apart from that been running vista home premium for 12 months now... no worries tho there are some tweaks youll need to do to avoid some issues like:
* hd grind - to fix stop defender, auto defrag and indexing
* turn off some of the effects they'll slow your pc downalso go for a laptop with at least 2 gig ram, proper gfx card (not onboard) and as big a hd as yu can get.
