hi all, quick question if I may...
I have a client who wants a 3D logo animated and rendered. it is pretty basic, and I have it done with a nice HDRI render, no problems there. A 3 second animation took 4.8 hours to render on my dual core box (pc - yeh, i kno, i need teh mac). Question is, do i bill the client for th render time? Any-one got any indicator of what i could bill him? Appreciate the advice, love the new look btw.

yes, you bill for rendering time. usually it's done at a different rate from the actual work.

You can also visit my lens on renderfarm software, and other lenses I have on everything render farm related, for example this one: http://www.squidoo.com/software-… , hope this is of use for you!

- You refer to yourself as an 'artist'?
I'd be willing to bet you have a Deviant Art page.detritus

Depends. We charge per project, not per hour. Just gets too messy trying to worry about the differences and nuances (try explaining the details to a client, they just don't care).
So generally, we do not bill for hours (for the initial project). We do, however, bill or rerenders, material changes, etc.
[my company is primarily architecture viz, so may vary by industries I suppose, but I also charge lump sums for motion graphics, too, not for rendering time]

it is a very good question.
i like the above suggestion of charging at a different (reduced) rate, as it is still a service, but not complete laboring creative work.

shit this was bumped for some spam, and i gave a SINCERE reply...
fucking spam.

The only thing is 4.5 hours for 90 frames of animation?
- animatedgif0
Guessing 4.5 hours is a GI render, if it was just a logo you might have been able to light it with HDRI without GI and it would have about the same for a fraction of the time.

Include render time in the bill. Considering that you need to pay for render license, you need to charge for this.

@animatedgif
yeh man, GI like triples render times. and ive heard to that a hdri light system can produce very similar results at a much shorter time.
Also light domes work really well in this respect.

That's why we dont' charge like that. How do you explain to your client: "would you like GI or almost GI?", "blurry reflections or not?", etc.
We did in the beginning, but just became too much of a headache. We assume an average render time and include that in the overall project price. No surprises.

"A 3 second animation took 4.8 hours to render on my dual core box"
1kb RAM?
