How many of you have gotten job or career opportunities simply because of who you knew that could help you get your foot in the door?
As I had my last day at my job of 5 years last week, I really started to think about that. Networking and business relationships helped me get my new job, and I wondered what I'd do if I didn't have that - how many other people I might have to approach.

20 out of our 24 people staff is hired directly through referrals.
Too many dumb people out there wasting my time.Do you have LinkedIn, mg? I am very much anti e-networking and usually prefer phones and IRL contact, but LinkedIn is one of few sites that I've actually found really useful for stuff like this.

Got one job and an interview because of referrals.

I've got several jobs or contracts through who I know (although I like to think it's combined with what I know as well).

I went solo a year ago and nearly all of my clients/projects can be tracked to someone I've worked with in the past.
It's a nice reminder that no matter who you work for, you're really working for yourself.

In order:
(1st) I got my very first fast-food job through connections and friends.
(2nd) Acquired only because I kept calling back to see if they were going to hire me, and eventually they did (seriously).
(3rd) My friends already worked there, and the boss was desperate.
(4th) and (5th) ones were acquired by myself.

my last two positions have come about through networking, one from a flash user's group, the other just knowing people.
