i bought one of the first vista machines not even knowing (like an idiot) that vista was even out yet.
it was a little weird at first, but amazingly enough i have no complaints... the only thing that i have found are some plugins like sapphire for after effects dont work. thats about it though. just turn off all the "gadgets" and stupid bells and whistles and its not as much of a hog as it could be. i think mine went from nearly a gig of memory JUST to run to about 500 mbs.... which i guess isnt too bad.

Buy a Mac - bet it will make you much happier.

(Nov 6 07, 08:12)Don't think I haven't considered it. I hear good things about Windows on a Mac.
I think the famous Jaline is doing it. Don't know if she's lurking about, but I would like to know what she, or anyone else, thinks on that.

So, back to my original question:
Anyone here removed the preinstalled Vista OS from a new machine and lived to tell about it...
or are you buzzards just waiting to see if I'll survive?I feel so cold and alone right now.

The SATA driver thing seems to cause problems for most folks who wipe the drives on pre-installed machines.
There's a whole sequence you have to follow and some companies have stopped providing XP drivers.
I'm buying a DELL and have downloaded every driver related to XP I could find on their website...
and I'm still nervous.

i have some trouble installing a wireless USB modem on it ...but with some search on the web, i found a workaround and it's fine now... and yesterday i found some new drivers...
..give it some time and it will be fine as XP is by now...

Just went backward this weekend myself...
... Vista needs another year to clean itself up... just not worth it... and there are a number of 3rd party apps that won't do a thing for you in Vista..
Apps like Particle Illusion and bunch of existing games etc... plbtthhh... nothin'. :(

That's a rare testimony, M.
Most of what I've read is nightmarish. And there are a few components I use that don't play well with Vista.

resource hog.
my brother just went back to xp from visa, but it wasn't preinstalled on his machine...

it's not as stable as XP but it's rather improved in navigation, overall looks, access, etc. You can use a classic windows layout without the 2A stuff.

why do you want to do that?!?
come on!! i am on vista since a month, and i have no complains...

Gotta buy a new notebook and that fu*ker's gonna have Vista installed. I've read through a number of surgical procedures on how to wipe Shista and downgrade (a serious misnomer) to XP.
Has anyone here actually done it?
How's it workin' for you?
Thanx.
