Hi all:
I have just gone freelance, and need to ask you all about freelance rates.
First off, I am going to redesign a website (http://www.ramble.org/). What would you guys charge? This obviously needs help. And a lot of it.
Also, I have an identity project coming up as well. A brand new identity, that will go along with another website.
Your help is appreciated!

Needing some water for your ideas, pyeaton?
I think you should rip down James Joyce and start again.
As for your other identity project - I think it should be yellow, with a triangle, lion and a brush script font. It should evoke a sense of the future, tempered by a long-held belief in tradition.

the fee depends on how in-depth the redesign is, what functionality they require, back-end integration, etc... but basically you need to present a recommendation of their needs -
then...
hourly rate * number of hours.
voila

My God, wtf is wrong with me? I didn't even see the word 'charge' in your post, pyeaton. ffs.
Please accept a retraction of at least 75% of the witless sarcasm in my previous post.
Otherwise, what bulletfactory said, with a weighting for size and importance of client - by the looks of it, they're more on the charity side, so use your lower-end rates. (imo)

This subject comes up a lot in PVN and I always add this:
Don't forget to factor in how much of a pain in the ass the client will be. If they are the kind that will have you making "little changes" every day for a month after it is done then charge for that upfront so you don't have to seem like a bitch in the end.
And on that note - put everything on paper clearly stating what you will do and when the project will be done. This makes things easier to handle when the scope starts to creep.
As in all good relationships, communication is key.

I'm starting a bus company. How much should i charge per fare? Also, what difference should i charge between children and adults? Also, what routes should I take my bus on?
I was thinking of taking it down givemefuckingstrength road.

Theres a book by the Graphic Artists Guild, called "Pricing and Ethics Guidelines for Graphics Professionals" or something like that.
It's chock full of rates, sample contracts, and more. This should be in every designer's library.

Anyone know of a British equivalent to that AIGA book?
