My goodness...
i tried to code a simple button on AS3.0 for the first time, and i realize they changed all the behavior of all thing were working...:SEven "Stop();" doesn't even work anymore...
Feel like a newbie...*Need hug

you can do timeline based ani's when using AS3 but its quite different. look at tween classes if you want to move or animate something
check this for buttons

Thanks Maximillion_ ...
will take a look, but i have to get back to AS2.0 for now...Cheers Mate! =)

to understand AS3 better it makes it easier if you start writing your functions as methods of classes and taking an OO approach with classes.
Its not as bad as it looks and it really helps you to understand why the difference between AS2 and AS3

Tween classes are fine for navigation systems and simple movements, but for more complex motion graphics, I'll need to be tweening. I'm a little intimidated about AS3

"Even "Stop();" doesn't even work anymore...
Feel like a newbie..."that's because it's supposed to be "stop()".
I'm just being a jerk. Everything is totally OOP now. Those who leaped over to classes in AS2 will have a much easier time switching. I honestly haven't gone to AS3 yet but I hear it's much faster.

CyBrain you'll be surpised what you can do with tween classes and it is often better to add complex animations as video

It's been a while since I've reall done Flash. Is anyone using AS1 anymore? I realize AS had to grow from a simple scripting language but it's kind of rough to have it change on you this rapidly. Especially for designers I assume.

mrbee2828 nice portfolio...
love your work...

Good to start learning now. You still got time to figure it out, most clients are developing for the flash 8 player still. 9 player penetration is still low 90%, to low for a lot of major clients without a good reason.

AS3 is an entirely new language. I have been working my way through Moock's book, which as usual, gives you an in-depth look at every nook and cranny.
AS2 was AS1 in disguise.
The main advantage of AS3 is performance. About 10x faster I hear.

good point seed, remeber those rumours about getting rid of the stage - not a good sign for the designer/developer

Yeha I've had the Moock book here for about 3 months and I've read about 20 pages of it. It's time to buckle down and learn 3.0. Can't let the script nerds get too far ahead!

I really just don't enjoy working with Flash much amymore. I would like to get up to speed again eventually. Maybe if I had a giant monitor I would like it better. There is just so much crammed in a small space.
Any recommended links for moving straight from AS1 to 3?
- joyride0
exactly seed! the cs3 interface is really tough to work with on a small monitor. I was working with a client on-site and they gave me this 17" non-flat CRT to work with, drove me fucking crazy. Flash needs at least 23"+ (2 preferred)

(Oct 19 07, 07:30)Yeah there's a lot of new things to learn, but really for designers or anyone it speeds up development because you can import layered PSDs etc. . . for animators there's cool new stuff like copy motion. . . there's a lot of nice new features besides AS3. The AS2 - AS3 switch is intimidating but necessary for real development.

strictly typed languages are a pain in my ass. once you get the hang of it though, you can shift that knowledge to C# or Java

AS 3.0 = amazing
I never want to go back to AS 2.0, no more scope issues, no more delegates etc etc

So going straight from AS1 to 3 without checking out the foundation of AS2 is ok then?
- maximillion_0
id recommend reading up on classes, objects and methods
if you get to grips with the core ideas of how objects work you start to understand how it helps you.
AS 1 wasnt OOP so it didnt really have objects, AS3 is all about them. There is good information that describes them in the help files, this includes mx2004 (pro) although should be in the other version.

(Oct 19 07, 11:44)yeah, i'd say at this point don't bother with AS 2, just buy a couple of good books on AS 3 and get reading. Moock's ActionScript 3 essentials would be a good start
