Shooting stuff at night is great, especially when you don't mess around with flash. Trying to get the best of the natural lights available is best.
Saying that though I got this with flash and it was one of my favourite night shots...

Night photography is great and takes a good amount of trial and error. A friend of mine got into it heavily and did a workshop with these folks: http://www.thenocturnes.com/
The site isn't much to look at but they've got some resources there on night photography.

I find that when I use my digital SLR the shots just dont looks as nice as my 35mm. Do you have to do anything different with a digital than a film? i'm still a rook
- describe the difference. what don't you like about the digital photos.sikma
- with film it seems to have better grain and texture. With digital it feels flat. Could be my inexperience with digital. Though shooting in RAW solves those issues later onTheDrago

Try stopping the lens down to maybe f22 and go for a super long exposure. This will give you a star effect around point light sources.
If you decide to shoot film watch out for reciprocity corrections. Also don't forget to through a flask in with your camera gear.

two pieces that i did.. first one has a lot less processing than you think.. also a added a few strobes and some light painting with a flash light.. the second image was taken in the pitch dark with the ISO cranked .. handheld for about 5 seconds. the only light was the city coming over the hill and the flash light the bunny was holding.
night stuff is fun.. i need to play with it more.

if you don't own a tripod you shouldn't be shooting day or night.

yeah, only people with equipment should be allowed to take photos.
pffft.

honestly its the most basic tool, and probably the most important next to your camera, especially for night photography. but yeah your right just spend money on an amazing high-iso 5d mk2 so you can shoot at 1/30 + at night. your learn that way for sure. ha

There is so much trial and error involved. I got amazing pictures when I shot with (black and white) film a few years back. I found it to be much harder with a digital SLR this past year. I'm actually going down to Winterlude tonight to take shots of the ice sculptures and activity on the Rideau Canal (longest skating way in the world).
