Just sold off my 4 year old PowerBook and I'm in the market for a new one. I'll probably wait til Leopard pops out, but considering the fact that I was occasionally designing on a G4 12" PB, a new MacBook should do the trick, right?

Do any of you guys design on one?

Oh, FYI, my office computer is a MacPro, so this will be my home computer that I'll do some work on every so often. Mostly a mail, internet, media machine.

    Any thoughts?

Yeah, um, not sure why that posted twice.

    Yes

if you don't mind the teeny screen it should be perfect.

  • CincodeMayo0

Well considering it's an inch larger than what I had been working on, I think it'll probably do the trick.

Can it be hooked up to a real monitor like the PB's could?

Yes it can, you just need a mini DVI adapater to .... DVI or VGA

  • CincodeMayo0

Cool. Thanks. I'll wait til Leopard drops and pick one of those up.

I like the white one better than the black one, but I'm thinking it'll get super dirty real quick. Is anyone's white MacBook now grey?

  • rafalski0

Mine's closed and hooked to the monitor and keyboard right now, acting as desktop setup 80% of the time. It's too small for work, but good for travel.
    I recommend:
    - wait 2 weeks for leopard, new models will be out;
    - buy refurb, it's cheaper and in my experience better quality (thoroughly tested);
    - max out ram (non-apple)

rumor has leopard out on oct. 26, new MacBooks Novemberish and New MBP's in Jan

So if you can wait, wait

I bought one this summer and it's awesome.

I was going to go for the black one but couldn't justify the price of the black one over the white one (since I am a student and Apple is essentially charging extra just for colour). So I have the white one, which I received at the discount student price.

I am a neat freak (for the most part), I bought keyboard covers, wrist pads, and a hard, clear shell case. However, you could really survive without these and just Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser instead. I have all these extras on mine because I eat around my Macbook Also, it's white so dirt is more obvious. But fingerprints are more obvious on the black one, so it depends on which one you like less.

All in all, either colour is fine as long as you take care of it.

Yes, the screen is small, but I find that it's perfectly fine. I love the smaller look of fonts and stuff. It's perfect for moving around to school and when traveling.

I didn't get the Macbook for the look, I got it for the operating system and portability. But it's nice that people notice my laptop and comment on it.

    --------------------------------...
    Story of my purchase:

I went for a HD with 160GB and bought some RAM elsewhere. Once I received my machine, I discovered there was only 120GB on it (so they shipped me the non-upgraded version), and I had the extra RAM instead. I was pissed, since it still came from China and I waited a longer time for the "modified" one (if I had the standard version it would be coming from the U.S. sometimes, or it would take a shorter time). The main reason it bothered me was because there are no Apple stores in the area anyway, and talking to someone about my problem over the phone was kind of annoying and a long process.

So now I am stuck with extra RAM, but I called Apple right away that day I received my machine and they said they would refund the money that I spent on that extra HD space I added at the Apple.ca online store. I would've sent it back but I was going away on a trip and needed my laptop. But at least they immediately refunded me.

    The end :)

I'm surprised new Macbooks may be here as soon as next month but it could be true. The rumours usually have some truth to them (which we witnessed with the iPod Nano).

So if you can wait, just wait. But I always tell people to get the machine whenever you need it and upgrade later.

    I like Kona's story better

    ----
    Scene: 7

    Setting:
*The room is dimmed with flickering florescent light. The neon light sign outside the fire escape flickers along. A woman with a cigarette laying on the bed gently blows her exhaled cigarette. As she inhales, the glowing amber of the cigarette cheery lights her face. Than the door bursts open with a dark shade of a man.

    Enter Kona

    Kona: How now brown cow

    Woman: You are late

    *Kona walks toward the bed

Woman: Do you get the cash?

*Kona throws the cash on her belly

Kona: Here, this is what I have collected

*Woman does not flinch as the rolled up bills hit her

Woman: That seem a little more than what I asked for

Kona: They were carrying more than I expected

*Woman inhales her cigarette and talks as she exhales

Woman: You should of left them as they were

*Kona turns his back toward the woman

Kona: He didnt need it where he was going

    Scene 8

    Setting:
Kona and woman walking down a sketchy part of the town. She is wearing a short flaring dress that reveals her shoulders. She blond curly hair bounces as she agonizes her step in the high heels. The street is back lit with subtle glow around the couple. Sirens blaring in the background. Silhouette of people in the background but not around them. Kona seems to be leading her by holding her arm. She cant seem catch up with his wide stride.

*Woman tries to pause as she takes out her cigarette and tries to light it.

    *Kona flickers it away

Kona: We are late, we got no time for that

    *Woman in a angry stare

Woman: Hey, I am the one who hired you

*Kona stops and holds the woman's arm tightly, she seems flimsy.

Kona: Either we do it my way or there is no way at all

*Woman stops staring and turns her head and notices her something in her expression

*Kona noticing this, turns his head toward where she is looking

    Kona: What the...

    Scene 10

    Setting:
Kona and woman are back in the room. Kona is sitting by the dresser. The woman is in the bath room. The door is open and the light is flooding out.

*Kona stares at an old bottle of whisky jigs his shoulders with pain.

*Kona takes his blood ridden shirt off and proceeds to open the bottle of old dusty bottle of whisky

*Woman in the bath room yells out

Woman: How did they know where we were going?

*Kona does not respond and continues to drink the whisky

*Woman's body can be seen in the reflection of the mirror. It is blurred dirty misshaped mirror.

*Woman peeks her head out to the room

    Woman: did you hear me?

    *Kona pauses with silence

Kona: Its not if they knew it or not. Its what are we gonna do next.

*Woman back in the bathroom starts talking

Woman: I am not even sure if you could do the job. This is getting more messed up.

*Woman walks out with a towel over her head naked toward the table near the tv, and lights up a cigarette. She pauses and looks a the flickering neon light.

*Woman crouches on a side chair curled up staring at Kona's back. Ashing her cigarette on floor.

    Woman: does it hurt?

*Kona does not respond or looks back at her.

Thanks for the story and tips Jaline. I just spoke to Mac and there's no word of new machines coming out anytime soon, so I think I'll just go pick up my MacBook today. I was going to wait til Leopard came out, but apparently it'll only cost me $9.95 to upgrade, and Leopard will be delivered to me on the 26th. So rather then stand in line, might as well have it shipped.

I'm thinking I'll go with the white. Roommate already has a black, and I'm not too keen on the shininess of the black one. I prefer matte to gloss, and the white just doesn't seem to stand out as much. My hands do get a bit clammy when I'm working though...where'd you pick up that keyboard cover thing you mentioned?

Thanks for the help guys (and gal).

  • rafalski0

The guys at apple stores never hear a word about new machines, they want people to do what you just are about to - keep buying machines that'll be dated in a few days. New macbooks are coming soon, if there's ever bad time to buy it is right now.. :)

  • CincodeMayo0

Yeah, but seriously, how much can they really change? Didn't they just come out in May?

I mean, I can totally see them putting out a 12" or a 15' or something, but a total overhaul or upgrade seems a little too soon, even for Apple.

  • rafalski0

Rumour is, they're going to be aluminum. Also the pros housing dates back to 2003 or 2004, calls for a redesign.

I don't think I'll ever buy a non-refurb apple computer, there's nothing about them but grey box they come in that would let you distinguish'em from a store-new one. I believe they're tested better too, never saw a refurb with a dead pixel and it often happens with new ones.

  • Jaline0

I know what you mean, Cinco. The new ones came out quite recently. I think they will use the new operating system and make it smaller.

  • Jaline0

    I mean, thinner, not smaller.
