In a paragraph of text in InDesign CS3 with tracking set to 0, what's the maximum you would track text in to balance out the ragged lines?
I've tracked some lines in as much as -25/30 and now, in a moment of panic I'm starting to think that is waaaay too much, especially if there's a line with 0 tracking directly above or below.
Typeface is Futura Light btw.

Can anyone tell me what the Quark equivalent is to Adobe's tracking?
e.g. Adobe -25 tracking = Quark -3 tracking?

Ignore that last question, you just multiply the values in Quark by 5 apparently.

Maybe I should just crack another Paulaner and stop fucking worrying about it. Who's with me? Who want to go to work tomorrow with a hangover?
Maybe I'll get really rubbered and slip some swearwords into the project descriptions.

Depending on the project I rarely go over 25, I try to hold it with in +/- 10. Have you tried that new balance ragged line check box? Sometimes it works, sometimes not so well.

and doesn't ID have the ability to ease up rags manually as well?

I've found that Adobe Paragraph Composer makes manual setting almost impossible, the results are too unpredictable.
The 'Balance Ragged Lines' option is only good for large, single paragraphs - in a block of text with two or more paragraphs (especially with narrow columns) it's useless.
I've been trying to stick to -10/15 max but sometimes it's a bit tricky, especially with hyphenation turned off.

is this for widows etc? i alwats stick to -15 to 15. I was told that by a very good teacher at school and have stuck by it since. apparently anything tighter is harder on your eyes when trying to read.

i'd say its too much too. turn on the single line composer tool too.

I think I'm going to be forced to manually hyphenate, not that I really want to. Engineering firms like to use big long words like 'constructability' at the end of each line of text, just to piss me off.
Futura is really annoying to work with for text too (I didn't do the initial design on this thing). If I had my way I'd change it.
