So, who is the Jesus guy anyway?
Didn't he bleed or something, and drink some wine... or make his blood wine, and then everyone ate his body?

Not to mention, taking communion is a lot less messy than gorging on a large plate of spaghetti.

(Oct 12 07, 14:12)Hey I know! Let's join the mafia! They get communion AND large plates of spaghetti!! And they can kill people too!! Bang! Bang!!
I see it as a win-win...

Roman Catholicism + Christianity = same shit different pile.

(Oct 12 07, 14:48)Once again you prove that you don't know what you're talking about. As I mentioned before, there are true Christians who are Catholics (Henri Nouwen, G.K. Chesterton, J.R.R. Tolkien). BY and large, however, the Catholic church is what happens when a branch of Christianity goes sour over the course of hundreds of years. The Catholic doctrines of salvation (it's not just faith that saves, but good works and the sacraments), their doctrine of Mary (they believe she was perfect and that she can actually hear prayer from heaven), their doctrine of baptism (they believe that water in a priests' hands conveys saving grace), are all heresies that have absolutely no Biblical precedence.
The Reformation began when Martin Luther called bullshit on Rome's lies and twisting of the truth. Since then, the church has moved off in two general directions, Ecumenical (Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Anglican), and Reformed (also called Protestant or Evangelical): (Presbyterian, Baptist, Calvinist Reformed, etc.)
These divisions have downsides in that many of them were born in the midst of dissension and strife, qualities that everyone knows are not Christlike. However, sometimes the split was necessary, like the Reformation which was a reaction against hundreds of years of un-Bilbical Roman practice.
So no, they are most definitely not the same pile. Have you ever even been to an orthodox Reformed church? I know you grew up Catholic, but most Catholics grossly misunderstand Protestants. The vast maroity of criticism that I field from people here on NT is largely based on a deep lack of knowledge and understanding of history, and of orthodoxy.

*I should clarify that no one know beyond any shadow of a doubt whether a person has the genuine article of faith...that's a matter between each person and God. However, you can tell by a person's actions what is in their heart.
Also, I didn't mention what the Reformed church believes in contrast to Rome:
Salvation is only by grace, through faith. Neither works nor sacraments help in any way. Ephesians 2:8-9: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast."
We believe that Christ is the only person who can plead on our behalf before God. This is not the province of saints in heaven, nor of Mary. There is simply no Biblical evidence that anyone besides Christ led a perfect life and can even hear much less answer our prayers.
We also believe that baptism and communion are signs and symbols, not methods of salvation. We believe the communion cup and bread is a metaphor, not the actual transubstantiated blood and body of Christ. In Mark 1:8, John the Baptist says: "I have baptized you with water, but he [speaking of Jesus] will baptize you with the holy spirit."

(Oct 13 07, 07:20)"Exactly, that's what I said.
Same shit, different pile. I'm glad we agree on one thing.

I'm proud I do not know any of that mumbo jumbo.

yeah...I mean the Sunni and Shia kill each other over similar crap - except you know for them it's real and what you guys argue about is misguided. Whatever. Human beings have in inexhaustible source for self delusion. It's all comic book nonsense. Jesus ain't around to ask what he meant, and nothing got written down in his lifetime. It's all comic book crap by people who need a security blanket to deal with suffering and death. Grow up. You're not immortal, your light will go out, the universe doesn't care about you, and stop killing people or wasting their precious time (same thing in the end) with your comic book arguments.

Not the same shit is what I meant to say. So I guess we don't agree. The Protestant church certainly has its problems, none of us are perfect, but by and large they are different from the Catholic church. Very different.

(Oct 13 07, 09:02)These are opinions of yours, nothing more. The first-hand accounts of Jesus life, death and resurrection were all written shortly after he died. His minstry lasted a mere three years and he died when he was 33, so I imagine his apostles were a bit too busy healing the blind and ministering to the poor to head over to Office Depot for quill and ink.
Yes, human beings certainly do have inexhaustible sources for self delusion. But what if divine revelation is true? What if God is who is he says he is? What if there is one way, one truth, one life? TheBlueOne, neither you nor anyone else alive ever has or ever will disprove the gospel. Your opinion about the gospel being "comic book crap by people who need a security blanket to deal with suffering and death" tells me more about your own biases and prejudices than the belief system I subscribe to.
I believe that my soul and your soul last forever. However, I have no physical proof of this. And neither can you disprove it.
What is it that you people don't understand when I and others say that the Bible has never condemned unjust war or violence of any kind? And before you lump me in with the Falwellian cronies, remember that I firmly believe the Iraq war to be unjust and based upon an elaborate series of lies.
I am not wasting your time. It is you who choose to login, read and respond to these threads. It is your time to waste. Don't blame me for how you spend your time.
Until you can disprove my faith beyond a reasonable shadow of a doubt, your vain insults are but the buzzing of insects in my ears. Until that day, you are wasting your time in a vain attempt to bait me into insulting you back when you insult my intelligence and my faith. Then again, people mocked and spit upon Christ, so I am more than happy to be his fool.

(Oct 13 07, 10:26)How so? Do you see me screaming, jumping up and down and crying? Do you hear me pleading for Folkert & co. to tell the meanies to stop taking food from my lunchbag? Are you honestly interested in doing anything besides trying to get a rise out of people??
Can you muster anything more coherent than a half-ass insult without even so much as an explanation?
You guys are children. Talk about people who need to grow up.

in this thread the way to tell the crazies from the normals is post length

what is the point of disproving something you can't prove?

I just dug up some footy of gramme and flagellum at summer camp.
