Make the font bigger.

do not really have the real estate in the comp....anything else?

Change the font.
- Antonelli0
maybe try setting it in illustrator, convert it to outlines, then paste it into photoshop and see what happens...

Seriously though, unless you amend the font - that's how it will render at that low screen res.
You could pad it out a little - create a copy as a level and force the lightness a little, but then you'll fundamentally change the relationship between the gracefully thin curves and pudgy verticals.

Lessen the contrast - a darker white (is there such a thing?) on black, or white on dark grey will reduce the space needed to alias the thin elements of your font.
You've just chosen a doozy - 1pixel aliasing on black/white.

buttros for the help.....i'll mess around or make the client change the font (it's not set in stone...just the one he likes) anybody have any other suggestions for a serif?

The best font anti-aliasing options i've seen are in fireworks and flash. They both offer a custom setting with sliders for weight and sharpness of font. Play around for a while and you can get things looking super smooth slick on screen. I really wish Adobe implimented this option in all of their apps. Not just for text either, it'd be nice to get control over all anti-aliasing

maybe didot or elephant, but they might give you the same problem.
- linearch0
yeah....didot had the same effect antonelli.....i'll check it out in flash....thanks for the heads up.

you may need to edit at the pixel level to get it looking good.
1) try setting at 200% then reducing to half. It'll be soft, but might look okay.
2) create a new layer, fill it white, then ctrl click the text layer (in layer palette) to select the transparency, and apply that as a mask to your white layer. dodge/burn the mask to tighten up the serifs.
3) get a 1px pencil tool @ 10% opacity and start clicking some definition into the text.

copy and paste on top of it or dupe the layer in photoshop. always works for those small high contrast situations.
- Antonelli0
yea, what if you placed a duplicate layer underneath and set it at like 50% opacity.
- johndiggity0
just do it at 100%. keep layering till it looks good.
