Would love your thoughts here:
We have an attorney who, earlier this year, had our marketing department work on creating cd-roms for their particular service, and it's little more than (and I'm not kidding here) an interactive PDF full of links to pages within itself...
There's always something that needs to be changed - they give these out at presentations.
Am I wrong to want to tell them that CD-Roms are just totally behind the times, and that we could put this information on our web site so much more easily? These are business people... they have computers and network connections and business.
I mean, who really sits down to view a CD-rom anymore?

noone uses cd-roms anymore. you are right.

Ugh, I went through this exact situation while at a direct marketing firm a couple years ago. I had to succumb to the CD-ROM thing just because they wouldn't let up. But what I did learn, is that the whole industry is at least five years behind anyway, so it was fine.
But what I did do, was get them to agree to make it primarily just a big website. Turn all PDF crap into HTML and let it exist that way. Both online, and burnt to a CD if necessary. They loved it. Did it. Taught a toadie basic HTML and Dreamweaver, and boom. No more problem.

Thanks. :) They're so keen on it and think they're really cool.
And seriously, it's nothign but a giant PDF, 65+ pages with buttons and it's totally confusing because of the Acrobat tools for navigation.
They seriously want people to click within the PDF only, as if it is a web site.

Stupid is as stupid does.

acescence,
we've done that too. My take was that people are just going to delete the info right off of there.
That, and they were only 512 GB.
They did look nice though.

tell them to push it online. it's more cost efficient.
it will take less time to edit text via the web than edits to a pdf, save, burn, send cd to client.
pushing to the web is the way to go.

harlequino,
I have looked into doing the same thing - taking this project outside the office (through our outside designer who sort of coordinates this project) and him funnelling it to me, at freelance rates, so I'm doing the work outside on my own and making way more $$.

* calls CD duplicator service and quickly cancels order of 500 self promo CD roms.

oh no i hear you. What I meant was I worked there internally, and then once the 'solution' was implemented, I passed it off to another douche, mainly to prove how easy to maintain it was. Kept them out of my hair. :)

huge waste of time/money.

cd rom is standard to most people
you would be surprised by amount of people who doesnt understand USB keys
Also, most corp does not even let you use USB since data can copied
since they are pdf (which maybe big) and they are in CD (which people are most familiar with) I think it works to the lowest common denominator.
having a web download makes sense but what if you dont have access at the moment.
i am coming from experience where, 1) presentation was on the web but client site had no external internet access, 2) backup USB key got corrupted 3) presentation in laptop but laptop died, 4) clients computer does not accept USB keys
since USB key is considered as a HD, a lot of the corp system does not let you install HD on your machine
Conclusion
CD is the lowest you can go in terms of information distribution and delivery.BUT
if they ask you make a business card CD rom, shoot them
