nice idea. interesting use of google maps api.
shame all the projects aren't on the same map.

I like the Leeds Uni ident. The google map thing is interesting idea but doesn't really work, just feels all over the place
From the PBS post...
We wanted to make viewing the site a more personal process, giving options to zoom and drag. We wanted to create an experience that was as close as possible to physically holding the work.

(Sep 20 07, 01:21)I think it does to an extent, its an immediately familiar UI used in a different and interesting way.
The idea of physically holding the work is never going to work on the internet, but the analogy of a landscape of work could have worked had it all been on the one map, that you could then explore at your leisure.
Or something.

Pointless navigation

insightful response.

i agree. pointless. whenever i move i get only in blank areas. it's a disappointing experience for the user.

(Sep 20 07, 01:46)Who me? If you take a good idea and don't execute it, the idea has no point.
A dynamic navigation system like google maps is used to go between different locations. What's the point of it when you can only examine a single location at once? Who needs a map when their already there?

great work. good ideas.
not convinced about the site though

I think it works, it's a gimmick, a simple device... something to make you remember the site... 90% of websites out there have some pointless aspect to them, but there's absolutely no general governing rule to what can be considered pointless...
- Concrete0
Not a fan of gimmicks or function without purpose.
- Crouwel0
me neither.
but you already knew that.

neue75_bold. Do you not think it sets up a premise with it's navigational references and then doesn't deliver on them? Does that not make those references pointless?
I do like quirky nav and I really like the sites content but I don't think it works. Tricky/clever nav asks the user to think laterally, so it better have reason.

they've reappropriated the device well, it's not tricky, confusing or difficult to use by any means.. the zoom is a great idea [yet even better if they had more intricate work] the arrow illustrating that 'you are here' and then used to display information is great..
The only thing I would've done different, would have been to lay out all the work on one huge page and really use the navigation arrows to scroll around through the work [so mimicking google maps even more closely] and maybe use the drop-down as a 'jump to' feature...
I see your point and would normally agree that it's trying too hard, but for a change I think someone has relatively succeeded in doing something interesting with reappropriating an existing device...
