they've reappropriated the device well, it's not tricky, confusing or difficult to use by any means.. the zoom is a great idea [yet even better if they had more intricate work] the arrow illustrating that 'you are here' and then used to display information is great..
The only thing I would've done different, would have been to lay out all the work on one huge page and really use the navigation arrows to scroll around through the work [so mimicking google maps even more closely] and maybe use the drop-down as a 'jump to' feature...
I see your point and would normally agree that it's trying too hard, but for a change I think someone has relatively succeeded in doing something interesting with reappropriating an existing device...
