For a place a slightly different Japanese place - one were the actual Japanese go out to eat (among many of course) - Lan on 3rd Avenue:
One of the best filet mignons in the city hands down and a great sake tasting menu as well. Sushi is only so-so..go for the meat or the shabu shabu...you might even bump into Yankee Hideki Matsui. Not cheap but not stupid expensive either...
You can also check out the growing new "Little Tokyo" on 8th/9th street just east of St. Marks....noodle joints, etc...
For cheap clothes hit LES or Brooklyn not SOHO...
I'm too old to actual recommend any trendy clubs and so forth, although for some good jazz I like Zinc Bar:
