we like gradients because in reality surfaces are not lighted equally and everything has gradients?!
we like materials like glass, aqua, metal, because they look realistic!?is that so?
other reasons why those mentioned are so succesfull on the web?i am looking for readings on that subject.
are there people out there thinking about such stuff?
screendesigntrends etc...thx

yes. not just gradients but bevels and drop-shadows too.
I'm sure there's theory out there explaining it, but I'd venture it has something to do with the play of light on surfaces being more familiar for our brains to process, resulting in a more immersive experience. Something akin to the suspension of disbelief.
of course many people completely fuck it up. that's where the craft comes in.
reading might include:

i dont think so.
i think a lot of it now comes from seeing retro designs from the 80's and trying to emulate that. i see the 80's creeping back slowly for next year, and it's weird to see people copying old-school gradient designs.
makes my brain hurt.

think you're spot on there abt lighting. things are never evenly lit in nature.
and all theories of aesthetics link back to nature and the divine proportion for example.
think this goes back to evolution. usually things that work well also look hot.
