Going to China in a few weeks. Has anyone been , any suggestions? I'd love to check out the Shanghai art and design scene. Where do I start?

You're on holiday, take a break from design! Eat food, buy knockoff designer clothes and electrical equipment and laze around.

I'll be in Beijing on Sat then onto Xian and Shanghai, over to tokyo and back to Hong Kong! I'll let you know how I get on....
Now to plant some trees.

Beijing's great. Wan Fu jing is crap, silk market is good for 'designer' nice price goods. Where ever you go don't be afraid to haggle like your life depends on it, you will always get the price you want.

Also try Jevad, I think he has spent some time there searching out WHAM.

Yangshuo. i went to seven/eight places in China and it's the only place I saw blue sky, beautiful scenery, could breathe easily and chill out. In short, the only place i went that wasn't a city. You can go there on the way to down to Hong Kong.

Art scene in Shanghai? Hmmm... The real deal is in Beijing: the 798 District. Mad inspiration for any creatively inclined person.
For the tourist, i reckon Beijing has a lot more to offer in general. Check the "dirt" markets of Panjaiyuan and if you consider yourself young and hip, Xidan shopping district will blow your mind.
Hangzhou is definitely worth a visit. Southern China is amazing.
Got some piccies on Flickr that might whet your appetite: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fel…

(Sep 3 07, 06:16)i worked in Mianland China in Shen Zhen only. i never been to Shanghai or anywhere else. i was there on business not pleasure.
i worked in a factory all day and never seen anything cept the bar at the hotel or a bar in another hotel.
this time of the year is the hottest climate and dont touch anything.
i dont think i can help you much with this, since i never did the tourist thing over there.
remember there will be a lot of mold and grime everywhere, so be weary when touching anything and try to always have some sort of anti-disenfection gel or wipes with you...yoou will definitely need it.
im sure where you want to go is insanely different than the cities i been with-in.
sorry if i cant help...perhaps ask jevad since he actually lived in hong kong he may be able to help you more than my 20 business trips.
