I need a new computer badly. I'm still working off a 5 year old powerbook at home. Looking to upgrade, but I don't have a ton to spend. Thoughts? Also, I was thinking of getting an extra monitor if I got the IMAC and two if I get a Macpro. Any monitor suggestions?

I guess, do you need it to be portable?

iMac has a glossy screen. you should see it in the flesh before you purchase. I found the glossy screen to make to colors inaccurate for designing.

i don't like glossy anything.

(Aug 26 07, 16:15)Apple knows. That's why they want you to buy a Mac Pro. You are a pro, aren't you?

I just got a new 24" imac, very happy with the decision. Didn't have the cash to throw around for a mac pro, and didn't want another laptop.
I don't mind the glossy screen...guess I'm not really a professional afterall.

MBP. Nothing bad about having a portable device. Frankly it is nice to sit in the lawn with flowers, bees, ants, and my MBP. Plus the iMac do not come matte. color, color where is that color.
love. sweet love.

i have an imac and have had it for 2 years. you can notice how its really only made for 4 years.
I would spend extra and get a macpro.
it will be a better investment in the long run.

Good Point. MacPro for the investment, iMac for the short thrill.

imacs are cool and all but if you want a serious computer that you can depend on then get a real work horse.

I am waiting for the 16 core 32 meg chips in 2 years. I am going to divorce my wife, and marry my MacPro. ;) We should have 60 inch apple displays by then.
Beautiful machines, very powerful and one of the few apple machines you can actually upgrade.

what type of work are you doing?
unless it's hd video editing or 3d the imac will be more than fine. don't sweat the glossy screen, just keep the lights low and you will be fine.

(Aug 27 07, 08:50)...and don't forget to light some candles and take your pants off...I found it really helped me out...I've been designing like a champ ever since.

all kinds really, web, print and video. the macpros are just so damn expensive!

just so i'm clear. you're talking about the macPRO not the macBOOKpro correct?
the macpros are tall cash, and unless you'll be doing some massive video editing or high res print files i'd say the imac is enough of a machine.
with the 24" imac you might not need an extra monitor, as the resolution gives you plenty of space, so you can save that cash you'd spend on another monitor and get the max 4g of ram.
found 2gb sticks for under 130 bucks the other day.

maybe someone will know if this is good ram or not.
an imac is on my 3 month wish list, i'm going back and forth between an old refurb 24" or the new 24".

If you want a portable solution get the macbook. but if you want a home machine get the imac.
I have both and my imac kicks ass with 4mb of ram CS3 runs like a dream and is much faster than my macbook.
Oh and the imac dosnt fry your desk (or your nuts) like the macbook does cos the heatsync is crap. Is that any help?
- thenuge0
thanks guys. i'm kind of leaning towards the IMAC now. Macpro = expensive

dang... i am having the same problem. imac or pro. it would be easy as the imac is almost half what i would need with a pro... if it weren't for the stupid glossy screen! ugh. like kona, i have been thinking about getting one of the previous generation imacs.
as for the investment issue... i wouldn't worry about that, you can buy an imac now and another in two years if you want and only then equal the cost of the pro.
who has bought the new imac?
