Just wondered if nikon has a dslr that has lowish noise at high iso's (in the 1600-3200 range) because as far as I can see canon are coming out on top in that particular area..

canon is on top, but here you can compare specs for dif. nikons (in case you haven't seen this already):

d80 does very well in a high iso setting.

I can not stand shooting at high ISO. Check it out before you get stoked about it, way not worth it ... I rarely shoot above 400 now.
I see so much garbage, granted if you need that pic you will get it. I would rather pod the cam and snap.

Not bad but I think something like the 5D would crap all over that result, right?
Btw, d100+low noise? WTF? I have one and its waaaay too noisy! Well, it often works out nice on b/w conversions, it looks quite convincingly like nice film grain but the rest of the time its fairly nasty..

I'm no expert but I read in my field guide that the D50 has less noise than both the D200 and D2x at high ISOs. And it costs a shiteload less.

I find that hard to believe..

fuji S5 will perform better than the Nikons for ISO noise, but it lacks the real resolution. It is Nikon Mount in case you wanted to ask.

(Jul 23 07, 11:56)I am not a fanboy, but if you look into it you will find that the fuji sensor has regular photocells (6mp worth) and smaller secondary photocells for highlights(6 mp worth). Fuji then interpolates them together to make 12 mp images. The S5 has excellent whitebalance and dynamic range, but as I said before does not measure up in real resolution... though the 12mp interpolated could stand up next to a real 10 mp, depending on optics used. I speak from experience. I would say the fuji images are the best "printing" images out there. Yes, even over Canon.

(Jul 23 07, 12:28)they do have a nice tonal range but it really doesn't make that much of a difference. i would take the resolution of a 5D over the slightly higher dmin and dmax of the s5
god i'm such nerd.
- danthon0
I would take the 5D in a second as well, but it can be hard to switch if you already have thousands invested in glass. I am skipping the S5 for a d200 for now.
S5=weddings/portrait and low light
I don't do weddings... so I want the detail.

how does the 5D compare with the 30D apart from the grand extra?
- cacoe0
oh forget it. google told me.

The 5D is full frame sensor. They don't really compare much. The 5D is like a cheaper pro level camera.
