Is it worth it? It's going to cost me nearly $300.
I'd like to hear pros and cons, if available.
thanks!

Check out the event/speaker schedule for the year first then go to a Third Thursdays thing.
Email me and I'll give tell you a more candid portrait of things if you want.

well the pros are you might get to meet a lot of people you want to punch in the face. wait, maybe that falls in the con's category...
- 5timuli0
Actually I'm not a member but went along to a drinks evening and met a few really nice people :)

Probably depends on your chapter. (wow, could that be any more ambivalent?)
Philly didn't seem to have very many cool events. NYC, on the other hand, has stuff I want to go to, but either I forget, or can't I make them.

Personally I think its a bit much, I just went to see the helvetica movie here in SD and that was the first time I ever went to one of their events, but I was planning to see it AIGA or not, so doesn't really count.
On the other hand, I have been to quite a few design events and none of them was organized or sponsored by aiga.
I guess I dont really know if its worth it or not.

I just joined yesterday. Feel free to punch me in the face.

-----*looks up jaylarson's address; books plane flight...
I kid! However, there are always at least 10 people I would love to punch in the face at any AIGA or plain old art/design function that I attend; I try to keep that shit to a minimum now.
Hmmm, QBN Sessions might be a fucking bloodbath!

Yeah I seem to remember you losing your shades at the last event you went to Greg. :D
- lvl_130
yeah point5, remember when i jacked your shades...sucka!
i saw you crying in the corner later haha!
er, maybe not. i think that would end in a one two hit. you hitting me. me hitting the floor... :D
- jaylarson0
i joined since i am going through a design renaissance. i went to school years ago for it. got nothing. gave up. came back to it. now, well, i need all the help i can get.
- tommyo0
haha yeah I 'dragged' point5 to an event, I'm not a member either, and we both kinda stood there getting hammered talking shit. I can't even remember how I ended up with his shades...maybe I cleaned them after the golden shower I gave him in the parking lot? All I know is that I woke up hurtin' the next day, and probably blacklisted us from working at any Vegas agency. What a loss that would've been. //////////////////

i was kind of kidding jay. it may help. it may not. who knows :)
did you by chance see the pillsbury flour building tonight around 8? the back side of it was in flames! not the front side that they are converting into lofts, but the grain silos. i snapped a couple cell shots (didn't have my real camera) but was wondering if the thing sustained major damage. i was there before the fire squad was but it looked to be somewhat outside of the building.
anyway, sorry to get off topic :D

haha tommyo! sounds like an interesting *ahem night!
- jaylarson0
no offense. the membership seems to be what you make of it. put a little effort in, and maybe a plant grows. i did get a nice discount that i'll apply for the conference this fall in denver. i am stoked. i'll get there about 5 days early to go wonder the mountains!
as per the grain elevator. damn! i didn't see it. will have to check the trib later, even if they post it. nothing yet.
- lvl_130
yeah, i totally agree with your sentiment. i actually haven't been a member since college, so no offense taken :)
- mrbee28280
It really depends on where you are and what you wnt from it. Me, as a frelancer I got a discount on the CS3 suite which was almost what the membership was so it sorta' paid for itself.
On top of that I got a profile that has got me a few email inquiries and I get to go to events for free. w00t huh ?
- AndyRoss0
I want a free iPod, and a free copy of CS3, and The Trappings of a Successful Professional Life.
What do I have to join to get that?
- Geith0
What about for getting work, jobs, etc.? Is the directory any good?
- boxcar0
It can be good. I landed my first job via Minnesota's old job posting board, but I rarely see anything of interest on the member's only board.
And yes, you get out what you put into it. But the 15% Adobe discount is nice...
